What can anyone tell me about these WP 86' Cars?

What era are they? Would one be likely to be seen in the mid 80s, or were they far too old (ie, a 60's paint scheme)?

Late 60's or by 72 at latest I believe. Unlikely to be seen much farther east than Ohio as the parts plants that service Milpatis califonia were all in the Midwest and I don;t thinbk that included eastern Ohio. That said, it is a pool service and anything is possible.

According to the guide all were assigned to Ford misc. stamping Monroe Michigan on the NYC.

Yes, likely not. Tuscan/brown/whatever. Also still with WP reporting marks. I'm relatively sure that UP hasn't painted rolling stock yellow for a long time, maybe even back to the '82 assimilations. One thing for certain, the "Automated" scheme you might be thinking of died in the mid-'70s.   :-[

I think it's fair game on rolling stock purchases once you decide what RR and era you're modeling.  I jumped into the hobby so fast that I only had a couple of locos and a handful of cars by the time I had laid all the track.  That's no fun.

What I can tell you is they are the perfect holiday gift for that friend who you bump into at Kleins on occasion, the one who you've had BBQ with before, carpooled to the Eastern Shore with, the one who happens to model the WP. You know the one, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
