  Railfanning on the Yosemite Valley on Jack Burgess's HO layout in the August 2009 RMC was the inspiration for these photos on my Layout. Thanks to Bob Gilmore for taking the photos and Black & Whiting them. Nate Goodman (Nato). We see both a Southern Pacific and a Northern Pacific local train. for you nit pickers steam locos did not run with headlights on in daytime back then.

  Most railroad officials wanted clean burning locos, not much smoke not the volcanic clouds we rail fanzees like, ok so there could have been maybe a slight whisp of white smoke. My sometimes dyslexic (spell check that word) must have put the drivers on the wrong side of the highway, and the "Be Specific" slogan on the Union Pacific box car was a post war one cars back then might have said serves "Serves all theWest. "Route of the Streamliners" was a few years away when the M1000 was introduced.                  Nate Goodman (Nato).

  Lee, Nice helper engine smoke photo. Nand N W you are  right this was the transition to non vertical brake wheels,but most cars still had em. I think I put only one vert brake wheel car in the consist of one train and it may have not appeared in any of the shots we used. Nate Goodman (Nato).
