Down-under N scaler Rod Warren has a great feature in MR this month (actually Oct 09 issue) about his 14 by 20 Sante Fe N Scale layout.  It is a very well done layout.  Good show!

Rod is a great guy and has an equally great layout. Way to go Rod!

As an update to the article, Rod has informed me he has switched over to DCC. Took he and some friends about two weeks of work to change the wiring. He's also getting help adding decoders but he's off and running with Digitrax.

I glanced at it last night when it arrived - and I agree it looks good.  Looking forward to actually reading the article.

Figures.  After letting a 3 year subscription lapse, the first one I miss has a good N scale article in it...  I'll pick up a copy when I hit MBK tomorrow during my pilgrimage

His N scale replication of The Santa Fe reminds me of Cynthia and Stephen Priest's
Santa Fe layout in HO. Lot's of David Barrow in there too.

Agreed!  Very glad when MR shows a very realistic and well-executed N scale layout rather than the ole' coffee table kind.

I was impressed with the clean look of the bench work. Excellent presentation. My space is very similar and its encouraging to see how much railroad you can get in it without double decking..

As is my habit, I measured aisles (I keep a scale rule by the bed, seriously..) and it looks a little tighter fit then I might like but he did a pretty good job with that given the space.

It does make me wonder if I was willing to reduce my min radius a bit (21->16) and compromise on some aisle space if I could fold the peninsula over like he did to gain a little more space. I always remember John Armstrong's comment that one of the most common mistake amateur designers make is trying to use too large a radius for their space..
