What is this?

I know these are Union Carbide marks - these cars used to be seen up in NJ and I believe were moving to Texas. Obviously some kind of hopper containers, but carrying what?  I see no hazmat labels...

Can't say I've ever seen anything quite like that before - but the hopper outlets on those containers are the same as you'd see on a plastic pellet covered hopper.

By the numbers , they have quite a bunch . Less than carload hoppers that can be trucked as well as trained ?

Just guessing but it looks like the writing on the side of the flat car mentions VAE Boxes - wonder if they are containers for pellets of VAE (vinyl acetate ethyleen) ?

For what it's worth, they used to be spotted at the Union Carbide Bakelite Plant in Bound Brook...

I don't know - but there used to be a Union Carbide "BakeLite" Plant in Bound Brook.

Of course the Graham Cracker is the most famous invention from Bound Brook...

Graham Crackers were made of Bakelite?   No wonder I got bad teeth.

the containers are labeled DOWU - this is a unit of DOW Chemical in Argentina - Polisur SA.  they are bulk hopper containers with plastic pellets.  were these on the siding by the houses at the west end of Bound Brook on the CNJ line?  that is used by a manufacturer as a transload site - i have many pictures of the transload operation.

Steve - I always thought they were going to Union Carbide - on the Pt Reading Secondary...  But for sure, you would see them parked in that small yard in Bound Brook.  

Back in the days when you could publicly trace shipments on Conrail, I remember these cars were destined for UP in Texas City, TX...

My recollections are from a few years ago, I have not checked out much down there in recent years,
