Prototype for MTL Weathered SAL Hopper

I could not find a hopper painted and weathered like the SAL
car MTL is selling in "weathering" this month.  But I did stumble on this photo just now:

Looks like the "prototype" of the weathering applied to a different hopper.
Oddly, they left off the consolidated stencil.

As they say on Mythbusters - let's call this one "Plausible"

But isn't the MT car 'weathered' into a new number?

If so, i think that ruins plausibility.

They kept the same road number on the restencil.  But the prototype is a Magor car with round hatches as opposed to an Evans car with rectangular hatches, and built a decade earlier.  The car could pass for a Magor car if the hatches were changed I suppose, but it's noticeably not correct in the current configuration.

Ok, vaguely plausible!  ;D

I just think it's amazing with all the REAL prototypes out there - they pick the right number for the wrong car and then weather it using photos of yet another car.  I mean they can't even get it wrong without getting it even more wrong... ???

It is disheartening at times.  This was the second or third release on this bodystyle, and I assumed that it was prototypical without doing the usual checking.  I was very disappointed to learn that the car wasn't prototypical, almost to the point of returning it.  But the sides and ends are close to the Magor car -- so someday I'll cut out the center of the roof, put in a new strip of styrene and install the hatches from the MTL CenterFlow model to make it closer to the prototype.

No, they did not. 


The original number, which can still be seen under the weathering is 35059. I assume they didn't change the end numbers so it'll be easy to comfirm with model in hand.
