there were 4 through freights - 2 each way.  a train from Hudson Yard would head to Maybrook, dropping off cars at Warwick.  the power would then cut off this train and grab a westbound from the NH and return to Hudson Yard.  the flip of that happened for the westbound - that's 2 trains each way, but only requires 2 staging tracks and the main.  the third staging track is for the oddball Reading coal train not run every session.

the local worked out of Warwick and headed to Hudson and back.

see, i only need 4 tracks of staging.

I'll vouch for that.  I've got 8 tracks that each can hold a 15 car train.  By the time I'm done re-configuring, I'll have almost three times that.  You learn a lot when you start operating half of your proposed layout...

Having more staging will enable you to send different consists in to represent the 4 daily trains.  You can also have a pretend PRR train diverted due to a washout, and maybe a CNJ or EL run through.  Open yourself to the possibilities...

i'm modeling a specific day in Sept 1967.  there were only 4 through freights and one local.  and maybe a run through Reading coal train, maybe...  at most, there were 6 trains, 4 regular freights, a local, and maybe a run through Reading coal drag...

the point i was making.... that Hudson and the staging can be one in the same place if a continuous run were designed...  Hudson at one pointwas 5 tracks, but the river got hungry one day.

I like the way they have added the (visual) staging tracks on the west side. It gives the plan a sense that it is somehow connected to the outside world. Otherwise they might find it boring over time to just run the trains around in a circle.

Yes, it is the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado.  You can see a D&RGW F9A & B unit in Aspen Gold 4-stripe scheme in the center of the loop.  The museum is worth going to if you're in the Denver area.  It has a good collection of standard and narrow gauge stuff.

If you scroll to the bottom left on the map you'll see the Coors brewing plant to the south-west of the museum.
