They look reasonably decent. Not 89'ers but better than the Atlas flats.

I'm not really familiar with 1st generation intermodal but I think I read somewhere that those brake wheels somehow stowed away when not needed.

Nope, brake wheels were always up ready to be used when the cars were in use. They were only collapsed to get them out of the way for loading and un-loading.
