Decoder Installs in Brass

I have four brass N scale engines that years ago I re-motored with Kato motors. The are good runners and I would like to install decoders, but never done anything but drop-in, don't have a clue. My only experience, a bad one, was having a Tsunami installed in a Challenger by a Arizona decoder dealer. This took over six months and the engine is a static display because it has never run since. The dealer took the money and refuses to fix the problem(s). So I am a little snake bit. The engines are Hallmark's, a tunnel motor, an SD50, and an SD45. As I said, all have Kato motors.
Any help and direction would be greatly appreciated,

At our NMRA Coast Division (San Francisco area) meet last weekend, Mark Schutzer 
did a great clinic in on installing DCC in locos, especially in brass locos.

Although he's in HO, I think well worth having a look, everything he says should
apply to N:

In case you're thinking, where have I heard this 'Mark Schutzer' name before?   .....

Mark is also well known for award-winning brass locos, which run on DCC as well as

Also, Mark is well known to worldwide NCE DCC users as one of the primary
persons responsible for the NCE DCC Radiocab 1.5 upgrade, which significantly
improved the NCE DCC Radiocab to the level of top performance that it has
today.
