Vehicle inventory

I am kinda a car nut. I try to focus on adding a variety of vehicles to make a convincing scene. I just repacked my vehicle box. All these are unopened. Here are some highlights:

Total vehicle count not including intermodel - about 1150 vehicles

Era- vehicles follow a bell curve. Vehicles start in the late 1960's to early 2000's with an emphasis on 1990's

Most prolific manufacturers- Road Apples/Lineside/RP Hobbies about 200, GHQ 60, Atlas 60, Athearn 55, Tomytec 50, Wiking 30, CMW 15

Noteable oddities- David Keese fire engine, resin Showcase Miniatures Chevy S10, Cast-N-Works Chevy Sierra pickup, and utility truck, JNJ resin VW rabbit, NJI UPS truck. N Scale Innovations 28' wedge trailer in multiple versions.

For intermodal I now own over 250 containers and 100 trailers, many custom painted.

So, what are you guys hoarding?

Wow.  You don't mess around Daniel.  On my layout I currently have 4 Classic Metal Works, 4 Athearn, 1 Woodland Scenics and . . . well that's it.  I definitely will have more but have to get through more of the scenery construction first.

One thing I noticed right away you were missing is Neal's N gauge school bus. I just recently picked one up and it is the only scale school bus I have seen that wasn't a resin kit.

I am also sitting on a few coach buses that were made for a European coach company to give to their customers in their paint schemes. Look very close to US coach buses.

Got loads of Atlas Taurus and F150s for my autorack unloading area and probably a couple hundred trailers. Also a lot of Busch vehicles including Mercedes, Minis, Audis and Dodge Sprinter vans in FedEx and DHL schemes.

I have about 50 Athearn JD tractors.  The irony being, of course, that the two types of flat cars I can use to load them are metal which makes them too heavy when loaded.

Could still use the 4020 in N though.

Whew, I've got a grand total of 15 vehicles on my 2 ft. by 4 ft. portable layout, from about 5 different manufacturers. I've also got 3 vehicles not on a layout, two of which are kits.

Since my large layout will be set in pre-World War II, I guess I'll be really scrounging for vehicles when I get that far.

I only purchased a few Neal's vehicles. They are produced by a few UK based companies (P&D Marsh, Graham Avis). The models are 1.148 so they are a little large for N. The schoolbus does not follow a prototype so I never purchased one. I do have a few Pirate Models busses.... a GM 1980's RTS and a flat nosed schoolbus that does follow a model produced from 1975 to 1980.

I hope the bus situation improves. I plan on purchasing a Make-My-Model bus, strip the wax off it, smooth the finish and add an Atlas L8000 nose.

BTW many of those euro buses look like a lot like some New Flyer models. I wonder if we will ever see a quality RTS model since the design was licenced to a few manufactuers after GMC left the market.

I never really got into the farm equiptment. There are no farms near here so other then a large roadside/hiway lawn mower there really is no need.

I have about 10-15% of that number, maybe, including military vehicles for my DODX train.  And a lot of those are foobies and only "close" to n-scale.  Probably only half are what I would consider quality models. 

For intermodal, I probably have a little over 100 containers and around 30 trailers.

My faves are the big Fords salvaged from old Trix/Bachmann/AHM auto racks...


With a little paint and some Micro Crystal Clear, they are scrumtralescent for loading those MT auto racks..  I think I have about 30 or 40 of them now.

I had one of those years ago that I got more for my kids than my layout. The Neals N Gauging one is better proportioned than that one and looks closer to 1/160th than 1/148th that Daniel stated. Still the only one I have seen that is close and a needed vehicle.

Eeks, I bought this years ago but it's been sitting on a shelf in my bedroom ever since - I never took it down to my train room. It's more like 1:144 or bigger:
