Wire Mesh Autoracks...

Anyone have a suggestion on how to replicate the wire mesh used on these open tri-levels? I've a buddy into HO that tried window screening... the result was ok, but not great. Outside of that, anyone else have a suggestion? Anyone done one before in N?

Get Chris333 or TrainCat to etch for you. They seem to be able to do anything.

I'd think that fiberglass screening would work pretty effectively.  Either that or that bridal veil stuff sprayed black (or bought that way...)

And what the heck are they shipping on the CP car?  looks like parts for the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man...

You could try printing them on clear Mylar or Acetate sheets.  ???

Plastic pipe/tubing. Probably for agricultural irrigation tile.

I think you're going to have a hard time getting ANYTHING fine enough to do that justice.

I like the printing idea, but there will still be the glare issue.

This is a tough one.

Man, I love the internet. No photo's yet, so alot left to the imagination, but this seems promising:

http://www.wovenwire.com/reference/catalog-index.htm

I'll have to see if any of my suppliers (work) carry anything like these meshes.

EDIT: Wudda ya think? Can't find a photo of a smaller size, but this is looking promising...
Smallest sizes so far are:

Mesh Per Inch: 50
Wire Diameter: 0.0090

or

Mesh Per Inch: 60
Wire Diameter: 0.0075

This is 60 mesh. Wonder how well it takes paint... would have to be real fine. Maybe magic marker?

How did we ever find anything before the internet???

It looks to me like the mesh on the cars is asymmetrical--that is, not a square grid pattern.

However, if a square grid is acceptable, the spray-painted chiffon I used for chain link fencing might work:

I cut it on the diagonal to get the diamond shape for the chain link, but it would be just as easy (if not easier) to cut it straight.

I haven't found a perfect mesh yet, but I'm still looking. Might have to compromise a little... heck, they MTL bi and tri levels are way off for CN and CP cars that I've noted thus far. Differences include the rack and the flat, so pretty much the entire thing!
