I understand this would be tedious, but can you stretch the decal a bit on both sides of the rib to accomodate the sides? I mean, stretch the decal in Photoshop before printing?

That is what you'll have to do, but applying the decal without tearing it would be hard.  So, I would scan in the car to get accurate dimensions and print the decal with cutting guide marks.  I would then apply the cut decals to each rib (rib decals would act as a cap; 3 sides) and panel (in between ribs).  Tedious for sure.

I'd like to see a 3/4 shot to see if the original artist (yes, I consider it art, vandalism too, but nonetheless art) bothered to paint the sides of the ribs.

I wonder too if the original artist bothered to leave the reporting marks, or if the painter who reapplied them took such great care to leave so much of the artwork. If the former, is this some sort of tacit agreement the graf artists and paint shops have, or a tactic on the artists' part to keep their work rolling as long as possible? The logic being, if the paint shops don't have to fix the reporting marks, the cars don't go into the shop until rebuild or major repair.

It's the Artist's way of trying to prevent his work from getting buffed, no agreement, they just don't want their graph "vandalized".
