Atlas Trainman C&O Caboose. "Sweet!"

 The new Atlas Trainman C&O Caboose is out, very hard to believe this car is part of Atlas's low cost line. Wow it is highly detailed ,has window glass, detailed underbody, the unique platform steps found on C&O cars are an extra nice detail. The C&O paint scheme is nicely done with black roof, red body, C&O "Progress" herald and road name lettering in white. The Missouri Pacific had some North Eastern style cabooses,don't remember if they were second hand cars. The Atlas model is very striking looking complete with correct all red railings, ladders, and red truck side frames. Then there is Union Pacific, while I know UP never had cars like this their centered cupola gives them a UP look even though shorter leingth, a very nice paint job,correct UP car numbers,the lettering and numbers feature the thin black outlining, end rails and ladders are red. Roof is correct shade of freightcar reddish color. These cars also are available in Chessie Yellow and Vermillion ,and Virginian. Two road numbers for each car. I can remember when we all though the Life Like Northeast Caboose was a great addation to the mostly Santa Fe Steel and UP/SP wood cars that were out there, the LL car even had very fine end rails. I still use my LV car when I run my LL Cornell Red with black stripes FA1 diesels. Now Atlas has raised the bar up again although the KATO shorty found mostly in the train sets is also pretty good. On a one to ten scale I would give the Atlas car a definate ten. Nate Goodman (Nato). "Now a car to run with my C&O BL2's."

Yes they are quite SWEET! The kick-off Customers for the original Magor Caboose were C&O, CE&I and MP. St. Louis Car and ACF also manufactured the same caboose with little or no spotting differences.....at least for the C&O. Other roads purchased that cab or one close to it. Atlas has done quite a few schemes in HO. Some are pretty much straight "Foobies", otheres are VERY close. CGW had a few that made it to CNW, but I donl;t have my CNW Color Guide V1 to know exact numbers. PM had some, TC had a couple that were pretty close and they made it to L&N. I can;t remember who else had copies or close copies, but I'mo not close to my research materials today.

Only three RRs used this style of caboose. It was made by Magor Corp. The C&O had the most with about 200. The Mopac and the CEI each had a few (maybe one or two each).  These may have been repainted as UP at some point after their mergers, but I could never verify that.  If anyone is curious, I can look up the actual numbers in my references back home.

This is the same caboose that we (Alkem Scale Models) tried to do as a brass kit a few years back. When that panned out, we tried doing it as a plastic model in a joint project with Deluxe Innovations. Eventually our joint effort fizzled, but Atlas found out about it. I provided our research, artwork and pilot model to Atlas and they finished the product in fine form, first in HO and then in N. As an N Scale C&O modeler I am very thankful for that.

To help offset costs Atlas will relase the model in various paint schemes, some which my not be prototypically correct (oh the horror!!!!). So if you are concerned about such things, caveat emptor. I regard it as a small price to pay to have this cool model available.

On cabooses, we're pretty used to foobies.  This goes back to our N scale roots, when we had to accept PRR painted on Santa Fe cars, and Western Maryland on a Bay Window (Dwight Jones' convention cars notwithstanding...)

Kato also puts foobie paint schemes on their little cupola cabooses, including C&O as a stand in for the Magor.

I hope you got a piece of the action there, Bernie, or at least a couple of free samples!

Yeah.  I think it's common to do prototypically incorrect paint schemes on cabooses.  Cabooses, like steam engines, are pretty road specific.  I imagine it's the only way to recover the tooling cost.  This was one of my favorites.
