IIRC, these were fine. I have a vague memory that they did a GP9 or some such using the frame from something else, and whatever it was wound up being several very obvious feet too long.

Yes, it was the GP-7/9 that was stretched to fit the RS drive.  That was the last time Atlas tried to get away with something major like that...  Over 20 years ago now!

It's a foobie mainly in that a RS11 shell is used (the RSD12 hood is longer and different in several aspects -similar though). IIRC the model is about a foot too short.

It is wrong... it uses a RS11 shell that's proportioned wrong to fit on the RS3 mech...

Actually the RS-11 shell is very very close to being right. The main problem on the Atlas/Kato version of the RS-11 is that they used the RS3 chassis, which resulted in the truck centers being about 2 1 foot too close together (corrected per Robbman's post below)

The RS11 truck center issue was corrected on the Atlas Classic (china) release (they tooled up an all new chassis).

The current RS11 shell also fits on the RS3/5 chassis very well, I have one on the workbench like that at the moment.

RS3:  30' wb, 52' over pilots

RS11: 31' wb, 52' 6" over pilots

RSD12: 35' 5" wb (tri-mount truck), 31' 9" center axle to center axle, 53' 8" over pilots

Well, if the dimensions aren't really off by too much, it would be cool if Atlas would do another run of these.

From the info I got from Mark's Spookshow site is that the shell is from the RS-11. The frame is from a RS-3. The trucks are from a RSD 4/5 and the only thing that was manufactured for this model was the fuel tank. I remember having an Atlas catalog a while back ago with a tibbit on a bottom on one of the pages showing a future release of 3 n scale locos with a caption of "in no particular order". One of the three was the RSD-12. I believe this catalog was from the early to mid 90's and at the time I was more then joy-ess (more like bouncing off the walls with utter excitment!!  ;D  ). So much time has passed since then that I've came to the conculsion that Atlas isn't going to do a new run of the locos anytime soon!!  :'(   

The other interesting thing is that the trucks of the Atlas/Kato RSD  and probably the RS3, can be narrowed to Nn3, if you don't mind filing a lot . . . there's a stepped 'shelf' inside one of the metal truck halves, that if removed, means the wheels can be narrowed to 6.5mm gauge.  Although new pieces of brass shim would need to be added on the underside of the chassis halves to hold the narrower gear towers in the gear tower recesses.

The dimensions on the RS11 shell are good. Using a RS11 shell made the Atlas/Kato RSD12 off too much in too many ways - it was acceptable then but I don't think Atlas would re-release it today with all the significant errors.
