SDP40F vs. FP45

Can anyone comment on how far off from a FP45 is a SDP40F? Would you be able to use the Athearn FP45 as a starting point for a 40F kitbash? Or just paint one and get away with it?

I guess I'm having early Amtrak thoughts. Something to add to my growing fleet of "Passenger Trains That Have Absolutely Nothing To Do With My Main Areas Of Interest"

You could fake it if you were so inclined, but the differences are fairly numerous.

The trucks were different, the fuel tank was shorter on the SDP40F, the rear generator portion was distinctly different, and there were countless little differences in grills, doors, etc.  They were buit on the same frame, so if you're a stickler for the details you could maybe convince someone like Mark4Designs to create a resin shell to be interchangeable with the Athearn body.

EDIT:  A quick search actually popped up a post on Trainboard by Robbman about someone actually making shell for these.  Being Robbman, maybe Mark4Designs actually is looking into this...

The FP45 is a good starting point. There are various ways to kitbash or scratch built the panels you need. Typically you'd use a FP45 shell and a F45 shell, but you can get a way with just one FP45.

You'll notice this is for the Santa Fe version with the chopped out nose. Also two vents from the rear are missing. But the pattern is a good guide. If you want a blow by blow method on making one PM me.
There are also a couple of threads on this site which show some build ups for a SDF40-2.

  The Santa Fe later obtained several was it four? Of these locomotives in some kind of a trade (if I recall)from Amtrak and they placed them in freight service in their later Yellow Bonnet paint scheme.               Nate Goodman (Nato).Salt Lake, Utah.

Amtrak traded 18 SDP40Fs for 25 CF7s and 8 SSB1200 locomotives. ;D
