So here's a small example I cobbled up that will hopefully give an idea of how this stuff works in an N scale world.
I used a metal ruler to help my layout one pair of rails (10"), then glued them with Gator glue. Then since I couldn't find my NMRA track gauge, I used a Microscale truck to help position the outside rail then tacked it down with more Gator. Finally 0.020" sheet stock, painted Floquil Concrete (not a good choice but it's kinda rainy out and I just used what I had on hand).

I simply laid the switch components out to see what it would look like so they aren't glued (and thusly I see they are a bit crooked).
