The snow shields if I recall correctly came from N Scale of Nevada, they were cast metal, released shortly afterthe KATO E Unit first was realeased I have one set squirled away somewhere. The set on the lead unit has had thin plastic  strips added to simulate the ribs found on some but not all of the UP snow shields, which my two Oriental brass UP Specific Detail A units have. Trailing A unit is actually a factory painted Con Cor Dummy, with Plaino Side Grills added, snow shields, added horns and a rotary becon on cab roof, also Union Pacific in large letters across the nose from Micro Scale decal set to represent a later schemed unit, but I did not gray paint the rear end, which makes not quite correct. I did do two Kato Units with gray ends, not shown on this train, and Plaino E-9 grills, re numbered with first order E-9 numbers, as these locos had duel headlights and all later E-9 orders had single lights and E-9 model identifier plaques on cab sides. The front couplers on all my KATO E Units are Zed (Zee) scale, but I left the stock factory couplers between units. I found that the old Walthers F Unit N scale decal sheets had letters just the right size that I could overlay the red letters with black outlining and the numbers over the KATo solid red letters & numbers. This was before I learned that careful work with a pencil eraser would remove the lettering on the first run UP cars and locos. E Units with the yellow ends recieved train numbers on number boards for COLA eastbound and Westbound, units with later Gray ends recieved locomotive numbers as by 1969 train numbers were no longer displayed.                                            Nate Goodman (Nato).

I saw those ribs . Nice touch . I had put the aftermarket ones on some of my HO E's , they had ribs . The late 50's was a mis-mosh of old schemes to new schemes . Unless you have an exact shot of the year , month and day you want to replicate , there is a 50/50 chance you will be wrong about yel or gray ends , nose lettering , silver or gray trucks , and snow shields , etc . Usually after you stamp a model done , then a photo pops up to make you feel bad about your decision . It's just head games , in reality few other than the well read knows of an error . Dumb and happy comes to mind , a place I wish with greater frequency to reside . We want to learn , but with that comes that little guy on your shoulder whispering sour everythings in your ear .

I have to agree about research not always following the exact timelines, eventhough my UP E-8/9 information came from several sources, the best one being an indepth article  (Cover Story) in the Streamliner Magazine published by the Union Pacific Railroad Historical society. With vast fleets of locomotive s some could escape repainting or other mods untill well after the stated dates listed for those changes. Nate Goodman (Nato).
