Received my GG1 today and went to work installing the recommended
decoder. DN163K1C is NOT a drop in decoder. Close, but not quite.
The GG1 motor is rotated 90 degrees so that the brush caps are on the
sides.
There are no brass strips as the other Kato diesels(SD40-2)this
decoder was designed to fit. The decoder wings contact directly on the
brush caps. Kato has provided a nice plastic cap that locks everything
in and insulates the wings from contact with the frames. I added some
kapton tape but really don't believe it was needed.
The decoder wings need to be re-shaped to match the wings on the stock
analog circuit board. Doing so will widen the space so they will slip
over the brush caps. After re-shaping, they will have to be cut down
to match the length of the stock wings. As they are, the wings will
bottom out on the frame halves (bad for the decoder) and keep the
decoder from seating properly.
I also needed to trim a little extra cicuit board from the short end
of the board so that it would slip in under the frame. A pass or two
with a file clean the excess off and achieved a nice fit.
There are two light tubes inside the engine. The short one is NOT
reinstalled with the decoder. The long one at the opposite end needs
to be cut off. It can be easily cut with a pair of rail nippers at the
notch. The notch is at the end that originally fit over the analog
board. The decoder's led is right at the end of the board so the extra
length isn't needed.
This is definitely not a drop in job. The modifications to the decoder
will probably void its warranty so test it before starting. Cutting
the light tube will affect the headlight at one end if ever returned to
stock analog operation.
There was no documentation included with my engine, not even an
exploded parts diagram.
