Heat!! Lots of HEAT!!

Better to use a zener diode. They will allow any voltage upto the knee voltage. After that, it will only output the knee voltage. This will also give off heat, but only once it passes the knee voltage.

Yes the resistor/diodes was what got this whole meter thing started. I have 2 zener diodes on another 6volt faulhaber motor and can't see how it is doing a thing. Now I know my meter f-ed up.

I am not positive , but I think Zenner diodes don't have the current capacity to deal with the loads a loco motor can require when working hard . They are generally more of a control current limiter than a power current limiter  IIRC . Could be wrong , but the ones I have are small .

Well ran to Walmart and found the $10 analog meter, decided to step up to the $16 digital. Got home to find the battery in it was completely dead...Grrrrrrrr.

New battery and it works now. Hooked up to full power read 13.87volts (output is 14) and I found that magic spot I thought was 7volts was pretty close.

Guess electricity makes more sense when you can see it clearly.

But as David dks2855 mentioned on page one , some power supplies need a load to really see the output . Without a load you see the top end voltage . I guess the load becomes part of the ckt so the LM chip adjusts to its regulated setting . Just something to keep in the back of your head .
