After ignoring my N scale Colorado Midland 2.0 for quite a few months I decided it was high-time for some Wild West JFRTM in N scale.

This ten-wheeler was a @Chris333 project...I just added a few extra details and painted her for the Midland. Chris lowered it, modified the tender, and changed the pilot among other mods.

And lastly, a quick 5-minute video showing that yes, indeed, the trains move on their own.

2 down, 3 to go...

Another thing I've been wanting to do is to get brighter headlights.
The glazing on these B30-7's really suck for transfering light!
I wound up removing the glazing, in this case it consisted of the headlights and numberboards, but not the front windows.  I picked up some .030" clear fiber optics, flared one end slightly with a flame, cut them about 3/8" long and glued them in place.  Then I glued a 804 LED to the ends and soldered the wire leads to the front light pads on the chip after removing the surface mount LED.

I filled in the numboards with a 2 part epoxy till they were flat, then painted them black and applied some Shellscale decals.

This is about 10 times brighter than the stock setup.
They'll actually leave a glare on the railheads with the lights out, but the camera doesn't pick it up very good.

Here's a LifeLike GP18 that I did while first testing the idea.
I did not use the fiber optics on the GP, I just glued the LED right up to the glazing.

Boy, some spectacular modelling and photography already this weekend.  Well done everyone!

I am trying to get back into the groove after an overseas vacation and before returning to work in another week.  I received my replacement Rapido tank cars and have got the first three ready for weathering ater changing out the wheel sets and adding safety placards:

I also spent a few days attempting a test rig for my 150-Ton Brownhoist crane.  After a visit to the museum to map out the rigging arrangement, I used a set of spare parts on which to practice and tried to duplicate the prototype rig using .008" brass wire:

I am not sure if the .008" wire looks too heavy; I thought that going down to .006" wire might be too flexible.  I then brush painted the wires to see what that would look like:

I then added the main and auxiliary hooks:

After painting and drying the wires seemed to be stronger and are quite secure in place.  Hopefully I can improve on this when I rig the final model.

I also assembled a GHQ loader for my tie train project.  I replaced the rear bucket with a REM grapple attachment to match what I am seeing in prototype photos of a BCR tie train:

This picture shows the loader sitting on a gondola as I am seeing in the prototype photographs:

All for now; back to the workbench!

I’m guessing you’re interested in the CB&Q waycar, it was a resin kit, apparently not available anymore

Looks like you missed the memo, Track29 Models now has the rights to print the CB&Q NE-12 Way Car.

FPSM has recently acquired the rights to print models formerly for sale by Out of the Box Models in scales other than N. N scale prints of the below models are available from Track29 Models. All of these models were originally designed in N scale, and I’ll need to scale them up and add features for HO trucks/mechanisms. If you’re interested in any of these models in HO or any scale other than N, get in touch as I’ll be able to get you a model quicker and cheaper than from scratch.

The crane is looking really good.  I have a suggestion for modeling the steel cables using brass rod:  Instead of black paint, use one of several available chemical brass blackening solutions.  Not only it will not add any thickness or blobs to the rod, it results in a dark slightly uneven color which would IMO look like the 1:1 cable.  And it is more durable than paint.

I used to use Blacken-It from  A-Line (Walthers), but several years ago @DKS  turned me onto a wide range of products from Jax Chemicals (https://jaxchemical.com/).  I ordered directly from them. Now I have about half a dozen of blackening solutions for various metals.  Micro Engineerig rail weathering solution is another alternative for a grungy color.

Thank you very much for your suggestion; I would not have thought of that.  I will see what the LHS has.  I have seen the ME rail solution before.
Can these products also be applied with a brush?
Can you recommend a specific Jax product for soft brass wire?

JFCTM. I’ve watched 1218 traverse the WNC loops, I was there when 611 stalled at the top of Saluda, and I’ve ridden a double header up Cumbres Pass. 2102 leaving Port Clinton in a hurry is quite possibly the best stack talk I’ve ever witnessed.

You're welcome Tim.  Just make sure the metal is perfectly degreased as oil or grease residues will prevent the chemical action from occurring.  Lacquer Thinner is a perfect degreaser, but Naphtha or 91-99% Isopropyl Alcohol will also work.  If during blackeninig precess some bright metal areas remain that means there is still some oily residue left.

I use https://jaxchemical.com/shop/jax-black/ (https://jaxchemical.com/shop/jax-black/) or https://jaxchemical.com/shop/jax-brown-black/ (https://jaxchemical.com/shop/jax-brown-black/) . I still have the A-Line Blacken-It, and Micro Engineering Rail Weathering solutions. They give similar finish to the Jax blackeners.

Just a little word of caution: metal blackeners are poisonous. Handle and use this stuff with great care. I rinse off the blackened metal with alcohol afterwards, and I wash my hands a lot.

Thank you DKS and Peteski; will exercise due caution.  I have alcohol for de-greasing.  I am thinking that I can stain the wires after forming but before installation which would solve some problems I encountered when painting.

I got the black for brass at a local supplier so will give this a try.

Thanks again,

Tim

@mplsjct Well done, you have definitely captured the feel of Northeast. I especially like the bridge, instantly felt like I've driven under that one many times. Looking forward to more!

Figured I've been posting a lot lately (at least for me) and haven't posted any modeling lately. Picked up on weathering some power again, think I started these well over a year ago. The F might be pushing 3 years...

A quick blur-o-vision shot but these are very much in progress. Another VO (4-stacker 939 this time), the first of many GP9's, and a pumpkin F. Utilizing oil fades and pin washes on the VO and GP. I like the fades that oils produce but the pin washes have been a pain for this acrylic painter. Have some Tamiya panel liner I'd like to try on the next one, and depending how that goes I might just go back to my comfort zone with acrylics. Flat coat and powders are the next step.

Excellent work all around this week!  8)

I think I may have one of these kits somewhere on the project shelf.
I would like a couple.  Went to Track 29 FB page..  would really like some wood NE waycars but could use these.  NE-13 EV are out of my era (pre-1958) but at least the first batch of NE-12s made it under the wire.   Just have to figure if one would get orange paint (ugh!).

Progress on the test 1:300 scale DL535E.  I tried 3D printing the handrails but that's a no-go;  although they printed ok on the front and rear, they are just too thin for the long run of the side; they were curling/sagging.  So, back to the etched handrails for the sides.
[attachimg=1]

I did a test print of the 1:300 dummy narrow gauge turnout using a more flexible resin called TGM-7.  These take Code 40 T-gauge rail for the through route, and the diverging route is not live--rails are 3D printed.  I may do some tinkering to make a working turnout design eventually...  Before curing, I gave the roadbed a curve and held in place with some push-pins during curing--it turned out ok.  Could probably curve a bit more if needed.
[attachimg=2]
I got a request from another T modeler for an open hopper so I refreshed the old 1:450 3-bay for the new printer.  I added some rivets along the bottom sill just to see if they would print--they do, but will probably disappear under paint.   These hoppers accept etched brass end ladders and bracing. Those of you who follow my ATSF LA Division thread may remember my "Barstow" staging yard is located inside an uninsulated garage, and it can get prototypically hot in there, just like the real Barstow :P Over the years though, I've had very little trouble with track expansion/contraction even though the temperatures do vary wildly. I even purchased a cheapo digital thermometer that monitors temperatures continuously so I have a record of highs and lows in any given period. It worked well over several years, until today. In a bit of an irony, with three-digit temps outside, the poor thermometer had enough and blew itself up at a temperature which shall remain a mystery. The black plastic surface of the thing got all soft and sticky, and one of the batteries had a meltdown.
On a happy note, the trains seem okay...

equipment I am replacing. Labor Day weekend the contractor is going to do the renovation to the 12x10 shed. Tape/Mud drywall and moving a few things around.
I will be working on the removing the present layout from the mother in law quarters (casita) and Janis will be moving stuff out of the shed into another storage
shed. Might be possible to have a new train room roughed out Labor Day Weekend.

I finished most of the staging yard this weekend including the locomotive storage tracks on my Milwaukee Road Layout. I put an extra turnout in on the west end of the yard so I could put a few extra storage tracks on the lift out section (still need to lay the track on that section). You can never have enough staging tracks, right?

I hosted the second of three ops sessions on the current version of my AC&Y Spur 4 layout this past week.  One more next Saturday.  After the first session one of the operators asked if he could do a video.  I really didn't want to but after watching a long cut of cars being shoved around the bend, down the ladder and into a yard track I thought "Why not.  This is why we do this, no?"

I had a week of major progress outside!  The full day-by-day story is in the Layout Engineering thread (https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=52187.msg748610#msg748610), but here is the start point, and finished project.  In short, I did a ton of cinder block/dirt/gravel benchwork, wired the layout up just enough to test, and ran the very first test train with a dozen or so people watching.  And it all worked!  Without the full wiring in place, I can’t run continuously yet.  But I worked every spare minute of last week to make this layout run, and seeing a U25b, 17 cars, and a caboose run the length of my yard was totally worth it!

The start:

The mostly complete garden walls:

And Penn Central 2504 cooling her heels after leading the first train from Wellsboro Junction to “Newberry Yard”:

If this coming week is half as productive, I expect to have great things to share next time!
