Title: Commemorative McGrattan Gon
Post by: lock4244 on June 16, 2016, 02:52:20 PM
Rapido has announced a commemorative gondola for our late, great friend, Pud. They are donating 100% of the proceeds to an education fund for his son Sam, and I just wanted to get this out here for the Asshats should anyone, and I assune it will be more than a few, wish to buy a pair. I know I sure will.

@rapidotrains

It is incredible to see an employer take care of their employees in this manor,
especially in this day and age. I'm a little bit speechless.

Thank you for doing this for Sam, and I'm certain Mike would have been overcome with emotion knowing this.

He related to us many times how he was treated as family at Rapido... I say you just proved it...

Not affiliated with them, but Rapido is a different kind of company, and Starfleet Captain Shron is a different kind of boss.

Just ordered my pair.

Can you check the link? I'm getting a 404.
EDIT:
Found the direct links in the Rapido newsletter.

Helping Mike's 12-year old son with his future schooling is a great cause. And what's impressive is that all of the purchase price is going to the cause, not the small percentages that most charities operate.
Here's a clip from the newsletter:

"To commemorate Mike's contribution to our great hobby and to help his family out, we are now taking reservations for a Mike McGrattan Memorial N Scale Gondola. Jeff Arnold at Prairie Shadows has generously donated the use of his 52'6" Canadian gondola tooling.

100% of the money raised from sale of the gondola will be put into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for Mike's son, Sam. When he goes to college, those funds plus interest will be given to him to help fund his education.

The price of the N scale gondola is $35 plus shipping. If we can sell 500 gondolas that means Sam's RESP will have a starting value of $17,500. There are two numbers available.

Forwarded your announcement to Facebook places he frequented.

Wish Rapido took PayPal.   :(

They may have to wait for me...

Got the news letter today and ordered. One of the best n scale purchases I've made.

Major props to Rapido for helping Mikes Family.

Ordered both road numbers. I wish my boss was one tiny fraction the awesome that @rapidotrains Jason is.

There should be no option for any TRW member not to get one, might as well delete your account if you don't  (no peer pressure)  8)

Ordered.  Since Mike modeled 1973, I'm going to make mine nice and 70s-looking with ACI label, COTS, and wheel inspection dots for my early Conrail roster.

Yeah, I haven't decided which era to place it in as of yet.  Conrail 1980 probably makes better sense than New Haven 1956.

Just placed the order. Hopefully TRW members are showing strong support for this noble cause!

Order placed.  Better get to work on that load of Tim Horton's to put in it...  Or maybe cases of Maker's Mark...

The rear cover of the March/April issue on N-Scale magazine says that these gondolas are "In Stock Now".  When does Rapido expect to send them out to us.

Received Jason's latest newsletter and he states that shipment of the gondolas (those that are sold) will start next week!!!  Some lucky dogs (or should I say, asshats) will soon have them in hand and I look forward to seeing them.

Now for the rest of us (yes, I am included) there are still around 150 cars left so there is time to get money up to buy one or more.  Keep in mind that its going towards funding Puddy's son's education so it is a very, very important thing to consider.  So far over $12,000 has been set aside for Sam and I am sure that there will be some who would want it because it will be a nearly forever way to remember our dear friend... God knows it still brings a tear to my eyes when I think about his passing and do hope that at least one can be mine very, very soon so a shipment of aluminum ingots can be sent north (one of my freelanced shortlines services the former Carolina Aluminum plant, making such a shipment a natural).

To learn more about purchasing one click the link below...

For any who are curious about what a shipment of aluminum ingots looks like the link below is to a video showing an R.J. Corman train hauling these unusual loads.  Heck, I won't even need a lid on the gondola since the weather doesn't affect them...

My PVR gondola has just arrived!

Many thanks to Rapido and Prairie Shadow for this great initiative, enabling us to help support Sam's education.

Just in time too, there is a very important train coming my way shortly.

That's awesome timing.  If you have time, consider making it look like an open air excursion car by loading it with benches and passengers and add it to the M3T.   :)

YES! That's an awesome idea.

I'll just have to see if I have enough people painted up (I usually buy bulk packs of unpainted Preiser figures... which saves costs, but takes a bunch of time to get ready).

Just put them in unpainted and call  'em naked tourists.  :scared: :scared:

@CNR5529,

Your open air excursion car created from PVR gondola No. 2016 came out fantastic.  So cool to see it tacked on the M3T.  Kudos!

Thanks, it was too good an idea to pass up!  ;)

By sheer luck Rapido accidentally sent me a second gon, also 2016, and let me hold on to it for photos over the weekend. The one being added to the M3T at the beginning is actually the second one...

Finally was able to pull the trigger after a suspected chest freezer repair was able to be avoided.  Been having to wait a long time for this... so very happy that in a small way I am able to help Sam... definitely will be a treasured piece in my collection of equipment.  Miss you Mike!!!  Still very painful for me when I think about the friend we all lost!!!

Mine arrived today too. The 2016 road number. Now to figure out @Puddington would have weathered such a new gon, nevermind what load it would haul down here.
