In a Facebook post today from BLI about MR looking at the pre-production Reading T-1 prototypes they mentioned they had new steam projects in the works.
Broadway Limited Imports, LLC
Kieran Connolly We have some new steam projects in the works for N Scale.
They will be at the N Scale Convention in Reno. Is anyone going willing to pin them down to see what these projects might be?
-
It would be so easy for them to do the es44dc and sd70m-2

Yes after the T1 and then the J1 apparently but they can and often do change their minds
-
Thought they were doing a PRR 2-8-0?

Yes

I sent an email to my contact at BLI a couple of weeks ago for an update on their steam loco plans. I have not heard back yet, sometimes it takes him a couple of weeks to respond.
My last contact was around the beginning of the year. He said PRR wise, he thought they would do the H10 first, then J1, then potentially the I1.

It doesn't matter to me what order they release these 3 steamers. Just space them out a bit since I'll probably buy at least 2-3 of each and need to spread out the hurt to Mr. Wallet. This could push my retirement back 1-2 years so that I can afford all of these locos.
And please, please make them with see-through spoked wheels.
-
And please, please make them with see-through spoked wheels.
That should be a given, since see-through spokes have been around since the infancy of N scale steam loco models. After all, these are expensive well-detailed scale models, not some low-end children's toys. Even if they were not 100% open (like in Kato Mikado), that is still 100% better than totally blind spokes.
-
You would assume see-through spoked wheels should be a given in 2023, but the BLI Pacific, Mikado, and Y6b didn't have see-though spoked wheels, even though the earlier M1a/M1b did

Weird, isn't it?
Someone probably doesn't think it is a detail that will be noticed (and it is probably cheaper to produce solid drivers). I wish we had an insight to what goes on in the designer's minds.

BLI should just give up on doing diesels and concentrate on doing steam only. Competition is always good but their competitors in the diesel department produce a much superior product. In general BLI does a better job with steam than diesel, so they should just grab that niche market and run with it.
-
I know one thing, it won't be a Santa fe prototype steam locomotive!

I hope you're wrong! BLI has done ATSF steam in HO (3751 Class 4-8-4, 3800 Class 2-10-2, and at least one other) , so I would think they'll do some of them in N eventually.

yeah, i highly doubt it at this point.

I'm pushing 70. "Eventually" is not my timeframe.
But then....reading all the gripes about BLI locos, maybe it's OK. I'll get by on my 20 year old Geeps.

I hope not! I really like my pups! They're not perfect, but I dig em.

BLI has has only NS accurate ES44AC...
I have 7-8 BLI diesels and no complaints.

Probably in line with the Reno N-Scale show this week, BLI posted on FaceBook about an event on Thursday, June 15th at 3PM Central for a "HUGE N Scale Announcement"
https://www.facebook.com/events/1344993966433753
I don't know if it means anything that the picture associated with the event is an ad for the HO Hybrid locomotives the NH I-5 and PRR Q2.

Wellllll...Although I've got a pretty good assortment of UP engines that operated between Ogden & Greenriver from 1947 through 1956, I need some "window-dressing" SP steam to inhabit the SP yard, roundhouse, engine house and interchange trackage in the Ogden Yard....particularly MT-4's, MT-5's, GS-2's, GS-3's, GS-4's (skirted & de-skirted), some Harriman era Consolidations with both whale-back & Vandy tenders, maybe some SP 2-10-2's or 4-10-2's, and a nice SP 0-6-0 switcher would be welcome too.
UP engines on my list would be first, a UP TTT, then a nice UP MacArthur. Also, some Harriman era Consolidations with both the Vandy tender and the distinctive UP cylindrical tender.
Any one of these would be highly welcomed on my railroad.
Cheerio!

Man id love for a true ATSF northern but like @draskouasshat said most likely not, but I hope I'm wrong.
Another id love to see hit N scale is the PRR S2 Turbine. I know it's extremely niche, but man I have the latest run in HO and it's so nice...
Lately I've been Impressed on their improvement in N scale. I picked up a ATSF NW2 for sh!ts and giggles just because of the paint scheme was unique, and it's a solid runner.
-
My guess is the Q2 is there just as a placeholder. I am guessing it will be something more standard. Hoping for more PRR steam, preferably an I1!
-
Does anyone know where this video announcement from BLI will be? I checked Facebook but there is no link.
-
From their web page, and Facebook, their big N-scale announcement was just a sweepstakes, not product. Sign up for their newsletter and get entered into a drawing for $5k of product. Other than that, just hints of more nNscale products being announced over the next couple of months.
-
It sounded like there was going to be a live video on Facebook at 4, but I have seen nothing posted there.
-
Reminds me of:
"DRINK OVALTINE"
-
They did ultimately post a video, but only to announce the N-Scale sweepstakes and hint that 1 new steamer and 2 new diesels in N will be announced later this month and early July. That's it.

There were 125 J's and they stayed out west. There were nearly 600 I's and they were pretty much system wide. If BLI releases the J, I'm getting one. If BLI releases the I, I'm getting 2 or 3, maybe 4. We know BLI marches to their own drum, so I'm expecting the J first...

Yep, I really want a number of I1s for my transition Era layout. Keeping my fingers crossed!
-
N scale needs an up to date 2-10-0 mechanism. I have no need for a hippo, but if they produce them I’m up for several to covert to WM I-2s. I’ll be buying multiple Reading T1s for the same reason - the mechanism is spot on for my road’s power.

I agree and I think most PRR modelers would have the same buying pattern. But if an H came first, I wouldn't be too upset.
-
I hope they do an H series loco. Not enough small to medium steam available in N in my opinion. If they do an H, I know I'm in for a few!

Yeah, but this type of logic has NEVER driven model development, sadly.
By this logic, we should have four different manufacturers making the H8-10 series instead of the GG1.

At least run a poll asking what product modelers would most likely purchase. Scale train just ran one and one was ran for the F&C PRR project car. Just don't have a pre-reservation meter, lol.
-
I am just hoping they continue producing new PRR steam in N.

I would suspect that when they do the J it will coincide with the C&O T1.
-
I guess us B&O guys are the red headed step children. They have a Y6b, make an EL-5. If they make a 2-10-2, how about a Big Six. Bmann made the EM-1 and it sold well. At least two runs with 8 rd#’s.
-
I just hope they announce a new model, not just another run of a loco they have already produced.
-

This is what they did in HO. I guess if it was profitable, they could try the same strategy in N.

B&M Berkshire. A very unique locomotive (which also served the SP and Santa Fe) was just announced in HO.

Just saw that, it is an interesting choice. Good to see BLI producing less common locomotive models rather than reruns of the standard, popular models.
-
I would love to see a B&M coffin feedwater heater Berkshire in N scale! Hopefully with see-through drivers (and as Stealth version).

Hopefully BLI got the message, and we won't see any more "blind drivers".

Clearly, the decisions by those various manufacturers to make GG1 models were driven by the widespread availability in N scale of PRR prototype catenary.

Kato ran a poll. The NYC streamlined Dreyfuss Hudson won.
So, what did they make? A UP Big Boy.

Yet another "T-1", this time from B&M. Maybe that's the selection criteria?
-
I didn't watch the entire video where they announced the Ovaltine promo, but skimmed it, did they mention they were going to have a new N scale announcement this week also, or am I thinking of someone else?

They said soon. Probably early July. A new N-Scale steam steam announcement anyway. They also said they would have an announcement for some HO and N scale which turned out to be the HO B&M Berk, HO Big Boy and N-Scale stock cars.

The BLI stock car is something I will never understand. It is the functional equivalent of making a baggage car, installing sound so you can hear the passengers chatting, and calling it a coach.
-
Lol, me neither. The mooing etc. is a gimmick, but okay....mildly amusing or irritating, depending on your views of sound. I could live with that, or not. But the solid body..what? The whole point of a stock car is that it's airy and open; a slat, some air, another slat, etc.
And a good, numerous prototype, too. What a waste of tooling...

Yes, we had this discussion when BLI first produced this "thing". It hasn't gotten any better. :(

they said 2 new N-scale diesels...
Hopefully es44dc and sd70m-2

I'll raise you a properly scaled GP30 and GP35.

without dynamic brakes please

Hopefully BLI won't do the GP30. I wouldn't want anything to affect Scale Trains doing them.

I kind of wish BLI would just focus on steam. They are the only players really pushing the envelope with new steam models. Bachmann has been re-releasing locos that have been out a while, and Kato only sporadically does a steam loco.
With diesels, you have many manufacturers releasing new models.

You meant to say Kato only makes UP steam right?
Yes I'll lump the GS4s in there because UP owns SP anyway.

When BLI came out with their Big Boys...six different version of the model, each with distinctive features, I was pretty impressed. Much moreso than with KATO's release of the 21st century, restored, excursion version 4014...which I won't call a "Big Boy" since it is obviously just the 4014 in present-day form...totally inappropriate for us transition era UP modelers.
The two models of the Big Boy that BLI makes that I am most impressed with are their 1941 and 1944 versions, although I am most impressed with their 1944 version since that's the version I use on my 1947 thru 1956 layout...Big Boys without the handrail-mounted aftercoolers. Both versions differ appropriately in various details, which says that BLI did some research and gave these models some thought.
Although I wouldn't buy their Excursion 4014, I weathered one up for a customer and it looked pretty good as the restored 4014, even though the boiler cladding was of the original design. Had a converted Big Boy tender that looked pretty close to a Challenger tender and a modern, safety-applianced oil bunker...and no ash-pans under the firebox. Obviously BLI had the models designed this way so that the ash-pans weren't integrally cast on so they could be not included on their Excursion 4014 model. Yes, extra expense and thought, but they did it. I snipped off the engineer's side ash pan dumping wheel on the model I weathered up, since there isn't one on the oil-fired prototype 4014.
Their Kenefick Version has details and paint that match the prototype on display in Kenefick Park in Omaha...also nicely thought out.
Even though I wouldn't buy one, their two versions of Two-Tone-Grey Big Boys, while being foobs, are correct paint-wise if UP had ever decided to do a TTG scheme on their Big Boys...even to the darker smokebox and blacked-out tires. The only problem with them is that there was no UP TTG paint on any coal-fired steam engines...so, maybe leaving off the ash pans and plugging in just the tender oil-bunker would have been even more foobishly correct.
Sooo...the point here, is that BLI, when they decide to do another engine, either steam or diesel, is likely to go the extra mile and offer variations between roads/models/time periods/etc. to make a larger market-share happy...which speaks well for the company and, I think, is smart marketing.
Cheerio!

I must agree with Metroline Red on that BLI should give up on diesels and just do steam. I have pretty many of their diesels and the pulling power just isn't there vs Kato. Maybe if they diecast metal the bodies like they do with their steam it would be a better puller. I'd like to see them run the centipedes again but they must fix the pick. You'd think for a locomotive with 16 driving and pick up wheels it would run great. I have two sets and they suck over turn outs every time. Give us more steam . You are doing great in the steam dept BLI.
-
Big problem with the Centipedes was the narrow gauge of all the wheels. So narrow that they had problems traversing Atlas C55 turnouts. At last my example was, but I heard others mentioning the same problem.

Once I corrected the wheel gauge on my Centipedes, they ran great. I had no issues after that, even through the Atlas C55 turnouts.

I would love to see a rerun of the Centipedes, I missed out on the first run. I also like all the special paint schemes BLI does on their modern locos. And now, with the option to get nonsound versions, I'm even happier.

Based on the N-Scale product page ( https://broadway-limited.com/pages/n-paragon4-steam ) it looks like there is a new run of PRR M1a/b coming in 2024.
Hopefully these will fund some new PRR steam. But it won't be me. I have as many M1a/b's as I'll ever need. I didn't get an of the recent T1's either for the same reason. I hope there are lots of others out there that still need them so BLI makes a mint. I need the hinted at H9/10 and I1sa's.
They have also added the GE AC6000 but I don't remember if that is new or not.
-
Yep, I see another round of the M1 to be released in 2024. I already have two, maybe I will pick up another one from this new run. I also want to pick up a T1 from the current run.
What we really need are H9/10 and I1's. Those are huge holes in the PRR N scale steam roster.

Everyone that bought one of the n scale Y6b's need a auxiliary tender. They did them in HO but not in n scale. Emailed about getting them to offer them and heard crickets.
