I installed Sergent Engineering couplers on two more HO scale freight cars tonight. I think this little Monon covered hopper patched for the Seaboard System is hawt, especially with the addition of these couplers:

Also, a little more track tonight, and we're out on the mainline now:

$17.78 in FUD with no mark-up.

That's beautiful Chris. As usual.
I bet you'd sell a dozen to Pennsy guys if you drew up a standard gauge version.

Chris,
That little speeder (and your diminutive layout that it is running on) are BEAUTIFUL!

I would buy an N version that fits that TU-TMC100 maybe 2 !

For standard gauge the little Arnold-N 2066 or Minitrix 12066 KOF shunters might work.

Well I will offer the Sketchup file to anyone who wants it, just don't sell it as is in HOn30 on Shapeways. I have no idea how to re-scale the model.

Push comes to shove, you can rescale your model on the Shapeways "Edit model" page. Not sure how well that even works, but it's there.

Could you scale it down in SW, download the new file and put it back into Sketchup for any corrections?

What do I do here. Just type in 54%?

If the model is HOn30 does that mean the body width is also narrow ? If so would it first have to be widened to HO first , then percent shrunk to N ?
-
What do I do here. Just type in 54%?
That's what I'd try.
Jason
-
54% is correct, but I doubt it is that easy. Like Richie says, the shell will have to be modified in other ways to make it into a viable N scale model.

I managed to get 2 DZ126 decoders installed and operating in a couple of older Atlas/Kato engines that I was trying to use CN-GP decoders in. The CN's wouldn't do a damn thing, swapped out for the DZ's with no modifications or changes and they work flawlessly . Think I'm done with the CN's.
Then I started on Medford Trains The Mill Kit . I had painted the exterior walls a couple weeks ago, so I figured I'd better get along with the build before any warping of the material took place. Here is where I left off, with the roof sections just sitting there for looks. Much more work to do on it.

Oooohhhh... the guy just moves into HO and already saying N scale is too small. :D
Actually, the N scale version (with the power truck) would look more prototypical, seeing it would have only 2 axles instead of 4. Put a bunch of seated figures at the doorways, paint the motor casing black, and nobody will notice the interior.
-

I know that you are attempting humor but Chris has always been multi-scale modeler. He dabbles in H0n3 and even on On3 (IIRC). He didn't just move to H0.
-
The prototype for that speeder looks a lot like the ones used on Nprthwestern logging roads. And I agree, it would probably sell in N and Nn3. Since I doubt that it was over 8 or 9 feet wide, the same body could be used for both. Logging roads weren't particular about standard widths, as long as it stayed on the track.
-

Out of the 4 CNs that I have tried, only one works. They are dead to me.
-
Just figuring here. An N scale speeder would have something like a 1.210" x 0.365" opening for the chassis. That TU-TMC100 chassis is 1.292"x0.441" So if scaled down it wouldn't fit. So it would need to be 0.082" longer and 0.076" wider. Don't quote me on any of this :D
**** I have no idea if this thing will print. Don't buy unless you want to be the guinea pig! This model is just scaled down and not adjusted to fit any chassis****
(((link removed, if you want to try order the other one listed later on)))
The heat map for wall thickness only shows very thin lines in red.

I should have warned you! :P Let me know if Shapeways says it won't print.
I can scale down the model at Shapeways, but when I open the saved scaled down model it ends up the original size in Sketchup so "so far" I have no way to alter the scaled down model. Once I get that figured out it should be easy to make it fit the chassis out of the box.
I hope they at least print well, they will be some tiny parts! The whole thing should only be 1.320" long :o

Thank you Chris and Jason . Being that I haven't heard from them that it is actual production I assume mine will have these updated specs ? Thanks again . For those not wanting to try and power it , it will make a fine static model , like all the rest of our MOW wee bits . Just add some Z scale wheels that have been widened to N gauge via tube or re-axleded .

I'm curious as to why you replaced the handrail holes with simulated handrail ridges. Seems like a step backwards. If it's because Shapeways won't print the hole, can you make a dimple instead to guide a drill?

Shapeways won't replace the first one with this, but hopefully the first one won't pass and they reject it. Still both are very small models with thin areas, but Shapeways has surprised me in the past.

On the N scale model the posts where the hand rails go are only 0.0272" wide. That is just twice the width of a #80 (0.0135") drill bit. I can put the holes back, but first maybe someone will show feedback on how the actual print looks.
Side note: There is no mark up on the N scale speeder, I make no profit. Maybe once it is a proven design...

That is printed paper that comes with the kit. It is cut into 3' 6" x 13' panels. After applying to roof, I added the brown with a paint brush and drug it down the roof with brush or my thumb, or a mixture of both. They come with the kit, but can be purchased separately from RS Lasers

Love that speeder Chris!
I spent most of this week getting the layout ready for an ops session next week. The last session before VanRail 2017 in September. What free hobby time I had went into the Nelson Station.
The balance of the parts from RSLaser arrived and go together pretty well.

I also sent the window and door filess off to two laser shops (recommended by @Chris333 for their quality) who have cut and shipped parts which should arrive as alternatives this week. Thanks again Chris!
I hope everyone has a great week.

Wonderful speeder @Chris333 and the Nelson station is really coming together as a spectacular structure @mark dance.
After a long absence from the layout room, I had some time and motivation to start working on Skoonka again.

I guess it can be ordered and the revision will ship. I will make one of my trucks to fit and use it as one of my prototypes. And if it will handle N or Nn3, I'll make it so just a two minute wheel swap will allow it to be either one. 12 V, 24" wheels, sub 20 MPH top speed, stone quiet, and glass smooth control from stop to wide open. This is exactly the kind of thing I had in mind with the chassis I've been working on. It should make a neat one! 8)
I'll also make it four wheel so will want to add leaf springs per the prototype. I'll order two if they're ready.
-

Gary
Gary, you ordered the new version I believe. It is still up for sale.

You guys might just want to wait till someone who ordered one reports back. I'd hate for 10 people to all have bad models. But yeah you can order if you want.

I'm taking advantage of recuperating from last week's hernia repair as an opportunity for "lighter lifting", making progress on models rather than messing with the layout. Robyn uncovered a spare folding table so I could spread out parts resuming the C855 project:
I had really never looked at these shells under strong magification. It so happened that this evening I was working under an OptiVisor, and was quite startled by the roughness of the FXD output. The surface looked like it was formed by one of those knurled wheel projects from metal shop. My mind's reflex was, "These'll never be right." The temptation is large at this point to spritz Tamiya fine filler over the paint and hope it doesn't obliterate the detail... too much. :(

It wouldn't be the first time I spent a few bucks on a dead-ender. ;) I'm at the point where I'm ready to start powering a few real things and this seems like a great candidate. 8) Even if I only get the flavor without all of the details refined. Do you have any sources for some appropriate sized leaf springs? :)
-

Wow , thanks .

I have done absolutely no modeling since January or so. I've been working on my f250 street truck that's getting a 750ish horsepower twin turboed 12valve cummins in it. Oh and i painted the house this week off.

Ordered two of those PRR Speeders. It should be a neat one! 8) Thanks so much, Chris. :)
Edit add:
And since this is weekend update... ;) I finished putting together another workbench I've had for a while and getting my machines, power, lighting, tool organization and the like more or less finalized. Also been working on a narrower chassis layout for those applications needing that, like some switchers. And the whole while the 44" chassis with new primary reduction design (and a few other details) is running around the clock. Up to 163 hours now and all is running good. That drive replaces the original belt design with its outsourced special belt and it's at the 95% sure point that it's a winner. Performance is excellent, has additional design flexibility, and what's probably the nicest benefit, it keeps all of the chassis production in house. So far I'm pleased as could be. :)
-
I spent the weekend and most of the week working on five structures. I figured it would be more efficient if I could work on the lot of them at the same time. I could get a better idea of what needed done if they were all in front of me. In addition to the pictured structures which are all z scale, I got a lot of work done on AR Tower and an n scale tower just like the z scale Clara Tower pictured.

I spent my Saturday reenacting Korean War FAC at Udvar-Hazy (the NASM's annex near Dulles). Was a great event, especially since the group I belong to whipped up a timeline display showing the evolution of the Forward Air Control role in WWI (USAAS), WWII (USAAF), Korean War (USAF), Vietnam War (USAF), and Gulf War (USAF), as this year is the 70th anniversary of the US Air Force. Each conflict had a tent, gear, uniformed personnel, misc "site dressing", and signs naming each war and decorated based on how the typical FAC aircraft would have looked during the period.
Plus, towards the end of the day we got a flyover from a B2 stealth bomber. Thing's as quiet as a church mouse till you're in its' wake. United had a new 777 on display for walkthroughs and cockpit tours, and rumor has it that they were giving out free black-eyes.

I was part of the NKP 765 engine crew for the Joliet Rocket out of Chicago on Sunday. With 70 mph running and thousands of people riding and watching trackside, it's a trip I'll never forget.
After putting the engine to bed last night, I was surprised by how long the human body can go without sleep, and be nourished only by peanut butter ritz crackers and left over shrimp cocktails. :P

Got my 2 crew speeders today , I think they are the first , now deleted ones . They are doing the back stroke in Bestine . I guess I will put it together tomorrow ,,,,, during a commercial LOL . This is the very first time I will be doing a RP . Thanks Chris .
By the way Chris , you could disguise that motor cover on yours if you detail it up to make it like a coffin , a little brown paint and some brass wire grabs is all that's needed , lol . Did you make or modify the air reservoir on that lead loco? All N scale GEs on the market today leave a lot to be desired with this detail feature.

That is my AC44C4M, I combined parts of a Kato C44-9W with a FVM ES44. The air tanks are FVM, I think the weathering makes them stand out a little more than normal.

Chris, is there a reason you wouldn't use a dry transfer since it's just a single number? I have read about difficulties using decals over flat paints and it seems like what you're experiencing with this. :| This is not an area where I am experienced, hence the question.

I gloss coated the model before decaling. Dullcote after. I don't think I've ever got a dry transfer on straight in my life.

There wasn't very much rain in Ranson, WV till Monday came around.
We hit the local flea market under the beating sun on Sunday morning.

What is this 'rain' thing that you keep talking about :? It's been in the 100's for a week and the forecast says it's going to stay that way until at least Sunday (or next work session).

I bet @Philip H has seen some rain in the past twenty-four to forty-eight hours. ;) Stay safe, Phil!

Thanks Dave. Yeah we've had a bit o the wet stuff down here - still waiting on the 48 hour totals to update. Lots of secondary street flooding and lots of still-rising bayous. But all in all not to bad - thought we may have lost a pool floaty to wind impact damage.

No modeling this week. Train watching in Munich. Beer drinking is involved as well. It's quite the local phenomenon :P
