Happy New Year.
Chessie System Fan was home for Christmas.
And he saw my file I had created for my home brew railroad.
I've never done anything with it-- that's why the info has stayed in a file.
But Chessie said-- you should share it with the Railwire.
So here it is.
Of course there's a bit of a story behind it.
I'm currently 55 and been modeling in N scale since I was about 28.
So I'm going on 30 years!
And now (drum roll)......
Here is my layout. It is currently 6' x 6'. At one time, when Chessie was a senior in high school, mom gave us the entire living room and it was 16' x 6'. THAT was fun, but this is ok too.

Now, I'm guessing a few of you are shocked--- and that is exactly the point.
People are sometimes amazed that a guy who has published almost 100 articles does not have anything close to a fully decorated layout.
I know, I know. My real love is kitbashing, tuning locos, and writing articles.
But some of my friends, even early on just could not stand it.
So they named my layout The Plywood Plains. Not an original name, but very appropriate.
So I then resigned myself.... well, why not. Let's just have some fun with this.
So I drew up lettering diagrams for future use when I would make my own decals and create a custom fleet.
The original ones from long, long ago were done by hand.
Most have now been edited into the computer.
And while I have not created a car yet, I share these diagrams with you as my New Years present.
The Plywood Plains is a cut-throat operation that.... well, you'll see.
Lots of photos coming.
I hope you enjoy.

Saw some of it in your Bi-Polar videos. ;)
We all figured Kiz would do something like this.
EDIT: Pete's gonna ask why this isn't in the Layout Engineering forum

Here is one of the hand drawn sheets.

Well, that's it.
I'm sure more inspiration will come one day.
Maybe one day I'll actually build some of this.
Happy New Year.

Good job Ron - you're doing better than I am. I don't have a layout at all (but lots of rolling stock and locos - many in pieces). :) I also like your humorous take on your roadname.
We all figured Kiz would do something like this.
EDIT: Pete's gonna ask why this isn't in the Layout Engineering forum
YEAH!
-
Raise the front cab on the SD7W so it lines up with the rear section and it wouldn't look out of place on a real railroad. Mexico had a few "kitbashes" that were at least as mismatched, and the C&NW's E B-unit to cab unit conversions weren't exactly "normal". All you need is an excuse for a double-sized "crew cab" diesel.
Or maybe the Rock Islands EMD-built 750/751, a boxcab, single-engine E6B/baggage unit? Which later had a second engine installed in the baggage compartment?
MP did the same thing with an E6A, but it at least looked normal on the front of a train.
-
I'm curious about the Soo Line U30C :D
That looks more interesting than any layout :)
Your question actually fits the thread.
I have a passion for building what no one else has... or what you can't readily buy.
Thus kitbashing.
This is a U30C backdated a bit to a phase 2.
It has the small grill in the high position indicating an oil bath filter, and the aerodynamic flaring at the roof line just past the exhaust stack.
I published this in an article.
Fell on tight times and had to sell off much of my early collection to pay hospital bills.
Big Soo Line guy who bought it had an article published in N-Scale Mag. And it was pictured there.
He eventually got out of N scale and Bryan Bussey acquired all or part of his collection.
Bryan offered it back to me.
And I was glad to get it back.
Very different from what I commonly build for CSX.

Nick, what the Mexicans did was the inspiration for this loco.
Instead of lining up the roof, I lined up the frame at the bottom.
Looked good at the bottom edge, and the coupler was at the right height.
-
What happened to the switching layout you brought to Columbus?
-
Happy New Year.
Now, I'm guessing a few of you are shocked--- and that is exactly the point.
People are sometimes amazed that a guy who has published almost 100 articles does not have anything close to a fully decorated layout.
Happy New Year back at you Ron!
Actually, I'm not shocked, relieved is more like it. :D
I always wonder how the more prolific guys manage to work on so many beautiful roling stock or other models while building, operating and maintaining a layout. I certainly can't do it all and tend to bounce back between layout and workbench and wish there was more of me available but then the rest of my life would be out of whack. Nice to see this thread!
Best, Otto K.
-
Well this has piqued my curiosity! Do tell do tell!! Pics too would go a long way! :D
What happened to the switching layout you brought to Columbus?

"Instead of lining up the roof, I lined up the frame at the bottom.

Good mechanical reasoning. I was thinking more of the prototype, where the F cab would likely be sitting on the former SD frame, but for a model, the structure is entirely different. Either way, it really isn't a bad looking railroad shop kitbash. I think you should build one.
-
What happened to the switching layout you brought to Columbus?
You have a good memory Paul.
I bet you're thinking of Louisville convention in 90 or 91. I think I had it there.
Yes. Actually, that is the only decorated operating layout I ever had.
It was a 4 foot by 10 in module. Track plan was the famous/infamous johnAllen timesaver plan.
Actually, I just got rid of it about a year ago.
Hey Chessie system fan. Did I give it to you?
-

C&O also had Phase 2 U30C's with oil bath filters, but all of were off the roster prior to the 1986 merger. Off the top of my head, I recall they were "sold" to SBD and traded-in for new power.
Atlas made a nice Phase 2 U30C in HO, too bad it has never been released in N....

Somehow I was always imagining a Cornerstone locomotive shop on your layout with "BEARDON BEARING BLOCK REMOVAL SERVICES' across it, with scrap BBRX mill gondolas piled high with them outbound....

Here is my layout. It is currently 6' x 6'.

I know, I know. My real love is kitbashing, tuning locos, and writing articles.
I drew up lettering diagrams for future use when I would make my own decals and create a custom fleet.
The Plywood Plains is a cut-throat operation that.... well, you'll see.
Ron,
I love your layout. I love your graphics design.
Sort of a maximum minimalist.
Absolute clarity due to lack of distractions.
Count me in as a fan.
-
Well what a bucketful of hoots Ron . If you put dead plastic fish under 2 legs at one end you would have a grade test layout .
-
Actually. I used to have a 6ft yard module.
One year I posted a pic with a little snake on it.
It was pretty funny.
-
I had the 1x4 layout for maybe a year but gave it back when I moved and had to downsize.
The track plan was like this. There were five industries located by the (*)s. The switcher beginning position and location for cars set out from mainline trains is the top left siding. It was a fun switching puzzle.

That bottom track should be more angled but you get the idea.

Ron's posts point out what I think is the greatest thing about model railroading: there are many different ways to participate in the hobby, and you don't have to be an expert in all of them, or even participate in all of them, to enjoy it. Folks don't have to have a highly detailed layout, or any layout at all, to get satisfaction from the hobby; you don't have to be a "master modeler" if that doesn't float your boat. There aren't many hobbies with the range of choices that model railroading offers, and that's a great thing IMHO. Sure beats golf . . . at least for me!

:| Ron your layout and the paint schemes for cars and the various locomotives are wonderful. You ask how some of can work on locomotives and cars and also on a layout. My answer is "With the help of talented friends." Keep up the excellent work. Nate Goodman (Nato). Salt Lake, Utah. :|

I needed a diversion from work, and you have given me the opportunity. Other suggested slogans:
We wedge out our competition...all the way to the finish.
If you saw how we saw...you'd see a lot more than bark in our bite.
We build our product...from the ground up.
How far wood you go...
We've grown a lot...
Our products: even new, they're older than most.
Our products: stand up to the test of time

I like them.

Ron,
I apologize in advance for this, but I have the perfect slogan for your railroad...
"The PP RAILROAD...It Doesn't Have to be BIG to Get the Job DONE!"
Just sayin' :D
HAPPY NEW YEARS!

I was happy to be able to get the Soo U30C back to Ron, as I know how attached he was to the model when he originally kitbashed it.
I personally acquired his Oro Dam U25C, which surprisingly he wasn't as attached to, and with his permission/blessing I kitbashed it further and repainted it as a Conrail unit. I didn't modify the stretched RS1 mechanism and it still works flawlessly. I need to add a decoder at some point.

Love it gave me a good chuckle. Thanks and love the last caboose , that's great!

Here is the yard switcher.

Hump yard? On the PPR? How does that work?

Hump yard? On the PPR? How does that work?
6600 hp seems like overkill for a hump yard...
If you remove the turbocharger on one of the prime movers and add pair of Roots blowers and a paper air filter, remove the other prime mover, you'd have a nice and efficient DD20
Bonus points if you remove the rear end off the long hood to make a huge a$$ "porch" to increase visibility :D

Cars roll VERY VERY slowly.

You just lift up one side of the layout.

Love it gave me a good chuckle. Thanks and love the last caboose , that's great!
For proper credit, I should specifically add that one of the original people who worked on these ideas with me was Garry Riccio, co-founder of Eastern Seaboard Models. He had a lot of fun thinking up some of these.
The last caboose came as I was making this thread. So that one is a new one.
As to the hump yard DD40 switcher, one of the story lines I was thinking about was that the PPR would steal equipment from other lines.... thinking that no one would notice. (which of course, is absurd with a DD40).
But just this last week, someone was telling me about a shortline that connected with some mainline roads back in the 30s or 40 (before computers) would somehow acquire freight cars from other lines and not return them-- while still charging local customers for shipping with said equipment.
I have absolutely no idea if such a story is true, but human nature is such that crooks are in lots of places, and if they can get away with something --- they will.

So maybe they DID steal that DD40!

6600 Hp would be overkill for a hump engine, but the unit itself might not be. Remove one engine, rewire so the remaining engine powers all the motors, and ballast the empty engine compartment. Hump work is typically 1 to 2 mph, and the biggest problems are motor heating and tractive effort. Most traction motors aren't designed for continuous operation at very slow speed.
The NP used SW1200s with 4-axle slugs in Pasco, while the BN replaced them with specially equipped ex-GN SD7/9s. Both had the same idea - spread limited horsepower over multiple axles, so the motors wouldn't overheat. A derated DD40 would work just as well, and could have been bought for scrap value.

You just lift up one side of the layout.

If you are interested in SOO SD40's, I found this cab:

Unfortunately, Kato's N scale SD40 is too wide to borrow the engine room and radiator sections from an Atlas GP40 without dynamic brakes, and the closest part I could find would be for the Kato SD40-2 (which has a seam down the middle that isn't correct for a SD40)

Now that the Sunrise or BLMA handbrakes are made of Unobtanium, the closest part I could find was a Miniatures by Eric handbrake for the GMD SD40-2W.
