Title: Meatballs
Post by: daniel_leavitt2000 on September 28, 2023, 10:24:42 PM
Ed, this one is for you. Imperial Hobby is now using their own 3D printer for the AEM-7 and the shells are VERY good. I gave up on the Shapeways version due to surface imperfections. They are available on Ebay:

From eBay description:
NEW! N Scale 3D-printed EMD AEM7 Loco body shell from IHP.  Finely-printed shell is sharp, detailed and accurate to prototype. Shell is not designed to fit any specific mechanism, but we recommend looking at the many drives from Kato, Green Max or Tomytec, available through Hobby Search of Japan.

If only the guy behind IHP wasn't a complete freaking nutcase.

It's sad, but I don't want to deal with him in any way.

Dammit.

Fleischmann makes an OBB (Austrian) 1043, which I believe would be the right platform for this shell...

Who cares how nutty the seller is? You would be conducting an eBay transaction, no? He has over 3000 100% positive feedbacks.  And on eBay buyers are protected from shenanigans.  Sometimes if you want something badly you have to hold you nose or look away, and make the deal.

I've long wanted a Pooch, ever since I rode behind them in the 1980s.   That's tempting, even thought there isn't an easy way to get a correct chassis (Kato SDP40 has the right wheelbase, but wrong trucks).

I don't mind doing business with nutcases, so long as they are harmless and keep their nuttiness separate from our business dealings.  I've no experience the IHP.

I also have a soft spot for these. Never seen it in-person, but I like the way the look, and the unusual Amtrak livery.  I tired to buy the shell just now, but all sold out.  Hopefully they will be relisted.

I do. I don't want to give a penny to the guy who brought a model of the battleship yamato to a VFW during a Memorial Day show and was then didn't see why the hosts weren't too happy when he planted it on their mantel.

Also, he's been jerking some friends around lately, so I can live without adding another project to the pile.

I'm not saying everyone needs to boycott the dude, I'm just saying I'm choosing to myself.

You can order from the ihp website, as long as you are inside the USA.

IIRC, he also attempted to hang up a small version of the Japanese "meatball" flag and that's what REALLY pissed them off...

I remember telling him about how inappropriate his actions were considering the venue. He didn't care despite others protesting his actions as well.He really made us all look bad that day. It's my understanding that he hasn't improved much over the years. It's a shame as he's a good modeler but a flakey business person.

From what I have seen mentioned here, he is a good modeler, and it appears that he is doing ok business-wise, but he just has a really oddball personality.
