Finished the second Green Bay and Western FA1.  I still need to weather them and add DCC.

New skirting installed on the RR room to hide all the tools, boxes etc.

Now to get carpet or carpet tiles to finish it off.

Another busy week on the White River & Northern VIII. First, I built the enginehouse inspection pit in situ.

After I decided to include the animated gas station from the WR&N IV, the first task I had was to replace the drive motor. The original was a pager motor that unfortunately burned out at some poin, so I replaced it with a healthy-sized gearhead motor.

Then I added four inches along the front of the whole layout so I could do a token bit of urban modeling.

This allows me to flesh out the town of Augustine, which I imagined might look something like Wolfeboro, "The Oldest Summer Resort in America":

I started to scratch-bash a hardware store.

And that led to a new animation project:

You sure you want carpeting instead of a hard floor?  Carpeting tends to swallow dropped small parts.  With hard floor they may bounce but they are there, somewhere.  :D

Hidden Oakville

Here are a couple of "Easter eggs" on the layout that visitors normally wouldn't spot.
The first is one the hill above the Caliente parking lot - the gravel road going from said lot to the cell tower far above.  Cattle country, so ya gotta have a gate.  And that gravel is actually under the trees all the way to the tower.  Gotta be real.

Here's the back side of the Dairy Queen near the Oakville water tower.  Note the drive thru menu (yes, there is a mic/speaker post).  The menu was shot at the local DQ.  You can't see this from any normal viewing position, but I felt it needed to be modeled.  Photo was shot using a front surface mirror.

My friend's layout room originally had a hard PVC tile floor. He installed carpet later, and it is *SO* much easier on your feet during the operating session. It is not a typical home carpeting. It is more like the hard-wearing low-pile carpeting you see in office buildings.  Parts that fall down stay on the surface.  Sure, because if the coloring of the carpet it is harder to find them than on a smooth PVC floor, but the low-angle flashlight search method usually reveals them quickly.

You never cease to amaze me, David. Even at this early stage those fans look stunning. Can't wait to see the finished product. Top notch.

Depends if you are operating or fixing. I would assume most repairs are done at your workbench. On some layouts I have operated on, carpet or padding makes all the different when compared to standing on concrete for three or four hours.

Kind regards,
Bill

Anybody seem a "cattle guard" in N scale?  I guess we could use some roof walk etchings, placed edge-to-edge, but not exactly right.  Still, it might make a nice "easter egg" for people to find.

P.S.  This isn't intended to be a criticism, just another wild idea in my stream of thought.  I up-voted your post because I like your model.
