My son, Chessiefan, was over last weekend.  He was going through my shell drawer and found something old.  He said that I should post photos for the weekend show.

So here goes.  Probably only old-timers would appreciate this.

The year was about 1989.  The Kato U30C was announced in August, but had not come out yet.

At that time, the only really good running stuff was the Con Cor/Kato PA-1, the Trix U28C, the Atlas/Kato RS-3 family, the Kato GP38-2 (probably the best at the time) and the Kato GP50.   There were a few others.

We also had a fair number of other locos that ran horribly.  So these were the wild west days of trying to put shells on better mechanisms.

Since I had figured out how to stretch an RSD-4/5 and even stretch the trucks.... I wanted something good and modern.

Enter the pitiful Con Cor SD50.

The goal was to update the pitiful shell with the latest details and then put it on a better mechanism.

So I prepared a master shell for casting and making copies for my friends.

Here it is:

Some will quickly see that the superstructure is the ConCor SD50 shell.  But I adapted Kato GP50 cab, battery boxes and pilots.

I added the Con Cor toilet hatch back to the nose.  I filled in the brake lever of the GP50 and added the casting (Alumilite)  of a brake wheel mount.

The air intake grills were two Kato GP50 grills spliced together to make longer and then castings made.  The exhaust grill was GP50.
My son said-- did you cut out the Con Cor dynamic brake fan grill and put it back.  I said yes, but the Con Cor grill was not at the right height (either stupid high or too low- can't remember which-- I think it was stupid high).  The blower vent was scratch built and castings made.

The radiator fans were taken from a Kato GP50 and added one at a time.  The radiator intake grills were GP50 grills that had been spliced to make longer and then castings made.

Micro Trains GP50 pilots were used.

And all recesses, cracks and crevices were filled in with styrene or body putty.  And possible undercuts were removed (like the coupler pilot pieces).

As you can see, this master was pretty much finished and ready to send to Konrad for casting.

Unfortunately, by the time I got this shell to this point....... yes, you know it is coming....
Atlas announced an SD50.

This has been in the shell drawer ever since.

Those were the days!

That was a really fun (and sad at the same time) story, and I really enjoyed it!  Yet another confirmation of we already know about how manufacturers secretly spy on us and then, just when we are finishing up some unique model, they go ahead and mass-produce it!

Some Progress on the LIRR IS.  Elevated trusses and beams are beginning assembly, heights and details need to be worked out but here are the mockups:

The worst mispronunciation I ever heard for Wenatchee was by a DJ in New Orleans:  wah-NEE-chee.  How he got that one I'll never know.  He was reading road and weather reports for truckers, back when WWL radio had an overnight truckers program.

The same DJ once had to read flood reports for the Washington I-5 corridor:  Snohomish, Skykomish, Stillaguamish, etc Rivers.  After getting down to Cowlitz he stopped and said "Are they making these up?!?"  Having heard some of the south Louisiana names, that seemed like an odd question.

Been working on converting the first of four Rapido PBLWs to the 8500 series with smoker lounges. As it turns out, five of the 8200 series were converted to have smoker lounges, and, as it happens, two of the five numbers are included in Rapido's initial New Haven offerings. And on top of that, Black Knight 8250, one of the five, lost its oversized roof vents over the lounge after being painted black and red. So minimal exterior body work is required to the stock Rapido car to convert it. I still need a roof a/c access hatch, but that is on the way.

In the mean time, I've started converting the interior. I milled off five rows of seats and built the new lounge area, and have started painting the interior. Just waiting for the right color tan for the lounge seats and dark Persian blue for the coach seats to arrive from Amazon to finish it off. Because I am darkening the interior, I painted both the interior body walls and the bottom of the Easy Peasy light board (which is the de facto ceiling) off white to match the prototype. With the lighter walls and darker interior, it also helps in both toning down and better diffusing the light.

[attachimg=1]

[attachimg=2]

[attachimg=3]

I'm thinking also of adding the round mirrors on the bulkhead walls, since I think they would be visible. Might have to add some people as well. Hoping to have this complete by next weekend.

@R L Smith and myself visited @Ed Kapuscinski and Windsor St Yard today.  My Gettysburg units pulled the yard duty of sorting out the A/D tracks.  I managed a couple of shots while Ron used his Lackawanna SD70ACe to pull the coal drag.

I've always liked the look of the dual control stand GP38s that PRSL had and at least one made it to NS (before they rebuilt it) so I've been wanting to model one. I probably could've just kit bashed one but drawing one is a bit easier and less time consuming.

With my wife working on the weekends, I have a lot of TT (Train Time). I came across a budget brand
of scenery supplies a few years ago at Hobby Lobby (Made by Woodland Scenics) specifically for school
dioramas. called SCENEARAMA. I pained a few pins dark gray and glued pieces of their dark foliage
clusters to them to represent evergreen undergrowth which exists almost everywhere.

I just got home from a week in NYC to find a box of New Haven Osgood Bradleys waiting for me. They look just like I remember them expect for one thing -- they're clean. When I used to wait at Canton Junction for my father to come home from work I remember these things being filthy. In fact, I didn't know the green ones were green until I was an adult and read an article about them in a model railroad magazine. I thought they were just a simplified black paint job.

I am back on the road, so I packed them back in their boxes and they will have to wait for a better debut at some future date. I have to say I have been waiting for these cars since, well, since they actually ran on the rails behind GP-9s.

I'm thinking also of adding the round mirrors on the bulkhead walls, since I think they would be visible. Might have to add some people as well. Hoping to have this complete by next weekend.

What do you have as smoking seats in there now?

The last few weeks have seen considerable progress on my layout, and last night a milestone of sorts was reached with completion of track-laying and wiring for the main line between Chetwynd and Dawson Creek.  I had hoped to reach this goal by July 15 and am pleased to have made it.

The wiring under Sundance included connecting feeders to bus wiring for the Sundance power district, and forwarding of the bus wires for future power districts at Chetwynd and Hulcross (south staging).  This wiring runs alongside the previously completed wiring for Septimus.  Here is a sample of what that all looks like:

(http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx206/BCR570/Layout%20Photos%202016/2016-07-16%20Sundance%20Wiring_zpsuzelul1z.jpg) (http://s756.photobucket.com/user/BCR570/media/Layout%20Photos%202016/2016-07-16%20Sundance%20Wiring_zpsuzelul1z.jpg.html)

In a similar fashion, the wiring under Tremblay included connecting feeders to bus wiring for the Tremblay power district, and forwarding of the bus wires for future power districts at Kiskatinaw and Dawson Creek.  Here is a sample:

(http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx206/BCR570/Layout%20Photos%202016/2016-07-16%20Tremblay%20wiring_zpsf5eevwxe.jpg) (http://s756.photobucket.com/user/BCR570/media/Layout%20Photos%202016/2016-07-16%20Tremblay%20wiring_zpsf5eevwxe.jpg.html)

The wiring work under Tremblay necessitated removal of the Pine River bridge.  Fortunately it was engineered to be easily removed for just such a purpose:

(http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx206/BCR570/Layout%20Photos%202016/2016-07-16%20Pine%20River%20bridge%20out_zpszcfmrh5c.jpg) (http://s756.photobucket.com/user/BCR570/media/Layout%20Photos%202016/2016-07-16%20Pine%20River%20bridge%20out_zpszcfmrh5c.jpg.html)

Meanwhile, the tracklaying continued east from Tremblay with a long sweeping 18" radius curve toward the Kiskatinaw River.  The Fairmont speeder in the photograph is just inside the new power district boundary:

(http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx206/BCR570/Layout%20Photos%202016/2016-07-16%20Kiskatinaw%20Track%2001_zpsi6fq7nvv.jpg) (http://s756.photobucket.com/user/BCR570/media/Layout%20Photos%202016/2016-07-16%20Kiskatinaw%20Track%2001_zpsi6fq7nvv.jpg.html)

The railway crosses the Kiskatinaw River on a 150' deck Howe truss span with frame trestle approaches at either end.  My temporary span has been in place for some time so it was a simple matter of connecting to it:

(http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx206/BCR570/Layout%20Photos%202016/2016-07-16%20Kiskatinaw%20Track%2002_zpsqgyslscq.jpg) (http://s756.photobucket.com/user/BCR570/media/Layout%20Photos%202016/2016-07-16%20Kiskatinaw%20Track%2002_zpsqgyslscq.jpg.html)

After the river crossing, the tracks swing through an S-curve and approach the yard at Dawson Creek.  This is looking east toward the end of steel; in the distance is the lumber mill at Dawson Creek.  Down on the lower level you can see the end of steel just beyond the west switch at Sundance, and in the distance the same for Septimus:

The first train to negotiate the new trackage was Work Extra 584.  Here the RS-10 is pushing its train around the curve toward the bridge:

and across the bridge, becoming the first train to cross the Kiskatinaw River:

WOW. Just...WOW!  :o

Incredible yard!!

With switching duties complete, they await their next job.

After the cars were sorted, Ed brought a road train in to swap some cars from the yard.

Train has already dropped cars in the A/D track (with centerbeam), and has hooked onto cars destined for Selkirk.

Oh man, I love openening up Weekend Update and seeing my handiwork!

@mu26aeh and @R L Smith, it was great having you guys over for, what I have later determined, was probably the first real Ops Session on the layout.

I'm really happy it ran as well as it did and you guys enjoyed yourselves (and you felt, a little, like it was 1985 in York). That's the whole goal.
I'd love to hear all about the things that weren't great too, so I can put together a todo list.

It was also really great to see @seusscaboose's layout hosting a bunch of  :ashat:s. I feel a real attachment to it too, after all the work we've put into it. I'm sad I missed the session, but I'm looking forward to the next one, and the next one, and the next one (you're gonna start doing them every 2 weeks again, right?).

@chuck geiger , your layout is a little gem. I'm really looking forward to my box of weed. I mean, weeds.

I shot a few photos of the layout myself, but it was after everyone left.

But, none of them give me goosebumps the way this one from Adam's does:

Train has already dropped cars in the A/D track (with centerbeam), and has hooked onto cars destined for Selkirk.

I needed a New Haven tower to go with the new FL9 and Osgood Bradley cars.  This is the N Scale Architect kit.  It built up pretty nicely.

The tower looks great and the New Haven units and cars look fantastic. The only thing they are missing is a guy standing in the back of the Osgood-Bradley car smoking a cigarette. When I was a kid and watched them fly by Canton Junction there was always a guy standing in door smoking a cigarette talking to conductor. I have a few Osgood-Bradley cars myself and I already have the figures to recreate this memory.

That reminds me of one of my first rides on the former New Haven.  October 1974 was my first trip home (to NY) from college in Providence.  It was the Friday afternoon of the Columbus Day weekend, and apparently almost every other college student between Boston and Providence had the same idea.  When the train arrived in Providence it was already completely full.  I was able to squeeze into the vestibule and spent the ride from Providence to New Haven in the crowded vestibule with the Dutch doors open.  It was a beautiful Indian Summer afternoon with fall color and the setting sun.  When the trainman squeezed into the vestibule to collect tickets, someone else was smoking a joint.  As the trainman approached, the guy with the joint offered him a toke - which he happily accepted (the 1970s was very a different time!) before continuing his rounds.  It was dark by New Haven, but they added several cars (former NH 8600 coaches).  From New Haven to New York I had a seat in the smoking section (center facing seats).  They never did collect my ticket (Providence to NY $14) and I used it on my (less eventful) return trip.

Reminds me of comment from a co-worker riding SEPTA back to Trenton on afternoons leading to long weekends. All the college students from the Phila schools crowd on the trains, stashing their gunny sacks on the racks. "It's the dirty laundry ride," she proclaimed.

About 6 years after starting, my B&M NW2 is nearing completion. I've still got some of the smaller decals to apply, then varnish and putting the glass back in. The holes for the front handrails seem to be overfilled with paint, they don't fit any more. Maybe that's a good excuse to replace the plastic with phosphor bronze?

Nice work. That paint looks really nicely applied. What did you use for paint?

Yeah, nice B&M unit.  I do find the slightly out-of-register red in the nose stripes slightly distracting, but I realize that there isn't much you can do.

This also reminds me that Arnold did a bonehead move on their SW1 by making those stripes silver/red instead of white/red.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed!....Out of the 3 companies that have produced this paint scheme, only Bachmann got it right(!), Atlas and Arnold both got it wrong...Which seems crazy since it isn't exactly a complex paint scheme  :|

That NW2 does look real nice though!

Yeah, Atlas made the white pin-striping around the red way too wide.  I agree that it is annoying that they can mess up even a simple paint scheme like that. But I guess that is what happens when the artwork is designed thousands of miles away from USA by someone who probably has never seen a real U.S. locomotive.  Still, you would think that with enough of free research material out there on the Internet, they woudl do a better job.

And in Arnold's case, the correct scheme would have been cheaper to produce as it would only need 2 Tampo passes (red and white) and not 3 (red, silver, and white).   Yes, I sound like a  grumpy old man, but I have a valid gripe!  And I actually own all those models, so I have aright to complain! :)

Thanks guys! It's Tru-Color black paint applied with an Iwata Neo airbrush. Yes, the stripes could be better, but there's not much to be done there  really. They don't show up in the pictures, but I replaced the grab irons on the side of the hood with some wire ones from BLMA.

Is that Tru-Color paint straight out of the bottle or did you spray a gloss coat? Nice even coverage, looks good!

This paint is the cats meow!  Extremely thin and even coverage, and a ready-to-decal surface finish.  Just like the old Accu-Paint used to be.

Yeah it came out great. I thinned it 1:1 with their thinners so that I could spray it at a lower pressure.
