Some traveling for me.  Got to take a bunch more pictures of Waterloo IA, and on the way back snapped a couple shots.

Not too much this weekend. took some butcher paper and made mock ups of my new modular layout sections, Cruised the neibourhood collecting scrap wood, it is amasing what the german throw out, I got probally 100 feet of 1x4 that are arrow strait, and some decent 1/4" homisote (spelling?) board, Mabey enough to actually build the base for the modules. I also rebuilt the pickups on my daughter's thomas the tank engine, and moved the decoder back inside the loco, elimnating the need for a boxcar for pickup. Of course as soon as I did that, she whined that "Charlie" (she named the boxcar) was gone. So now I gotta rebuild a frame for "Charlie." Also got a decoder back into my Atlas Shay, and have one on deck for the heisler.

EDIT: Just got done "Decoderizing" the Heisler, now gotta get back to the craft store to get some brass tube so I can finish the mo-fo. Oh and I need some Tiny surfaced mounted LEDs also.

After a long hiatus from modeling fraught with all manner of problems from health to legal, I'm finally back to work on the G&D. With the wooden trestle finished and installed, I'm starting on the surrounding scenery.

David, what will you be using in terms of power on the Z scale G&D? Will any of the locomotives be modeled after those on the G&D or are you utilizing your modelers license in this case?

After a big box arrived from Klein's, I was able to get track laid, trains running, and some terraforming completed. It only took a solid 10 hours of work yesterday, but no one's complaining. My apologies for the high ISO in the pictures. This will not be the final location of the layout so lighting is minimal at the moment.

I had an opportunity to blitz some scenery this week so I took it.  The trade off is I won't get to spend time on the layout now until late August so this is the last update in a while.

This week I painted backdrop details, and flocked and planted many hundred trees (500 or so?).  Here are some shots of the final area on the second deck to get scenery.

This shot shows Coryell at far left and Lafferty at far right.  The length is about 12-13' I think.  That's 500 trees...scenery certainly gobbles them up.

Coryell tank will be hidden behind the trees in the middle of this scene below.  You may just be able to make out the mock up.  This area is a transition to the snow scenes and the scenery to the far left is not finished nor snowed trees added yet.

Snowshed #2 West of Coryell

Slide bridge scene, now finished

Lafferty Tank

And a detailed view of a pusher set heading across Slide Bridge

I had hoped to post a Youtube video of the pusher set making its way through the scene but I am having problems with MovieMaker so no can do

Modeler's licence all the way. Power will be Märklin's Bumble Bee. You can see it in the maiden run vid:

SNFF 2011 07 23

Hi, all,

For my Foto Fun this week, I'm contributing some of the more
remarkable things that I saw at X2011 West and National Train
Show 2011.

Even though it's not N, I hope it's OK, as I think the ideas here
would be great for any scale :-).

This is Bill Iwan's beautiful HOn3 Rio Grande Southern display layout, that
Carstens Publications (the Railroad Model Craftsmen publishers) hosted
in their booth at the 2011 National Train Show.

What I love about this from an idea standpoint - let's see how Bill Iwan
angled two buildings to force perspective.  This is a great idea.

The house in the center background looks normal:

From above, look at the angle built into the building!:

The coal tipple looks normal:

From above, look at the angle built into the tipple!:

I hope this idea from X2011 West and 2011 National
Train Show are worthwhile for us model railroaders.
I may have more to come in future weeks.  :-)

I believe that's the Ophir Tram House and that angle is actually how it was built.

Jason,
I think you are correct. They may have skewed it a bit for effect, but the front wall is supposed to be at an angle.

Jason,

That's great to know, I've no idea of what the prototype was like.  I just Googled 'Ophir Tram House' and
can see there's a bunch of information on this prototype:

Maybe this angled front on Ophir Tram House is where Bill Iwan got the idea to enhance the angle to create more forced perspective?

I assume the other photo of the house with the angled wall, that this is a modeled effect,
it wasn't this way in real life?   Sorry, don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but probably good to know.  :-)

Thx for the good info.

The craftsmanship of Bill Iwan's modeling is absolutely superb; the structures are top-notch, and the scenery is breathtaking. But... I do have to wonder at the arrangement of things. A station immediately adjacent to (indeed, nearly under) a coal tipple? A house with skewed walls that don't need to be skewed? Am I the only one who finds this a bit odd?

The proximity of the station to the Tram House (not a tipple) is prototypical.  As for the house, which is actually the Oilton Club Saloon, the building was in town (and still is (http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=q994xs609t0k&lvl=19.41466479536477&dir=91.61225944211034&sty=o&where1=Ophir%2C%20CO&form=LMLTCC)), but the walls are square.

based it on the prototype.  :-)

David, while I'm not sure, I believe that the skewed walls in the house were done to force the perspective.  It'd be interesting to hear
what Bill Iwan's intent was.   He was featured in a recent article in Railroad Model Craftsman, maybe he said something about
it in there?  I don't know.   Regardless, I could use Bill's help on my models anytime  :-).

Although I'm frankly thrilled to learn about the Ophir Tram House, in fairness to the original intent of this thread, we probably should get back to Weekend Photo Fun Update.

With that in mind, check out this module by Steve Beals of southern California, on the Free-Mo-N layout
at 2011 National Train Show.  That's cool desert scenery  :-)

A final note on the Ophir diorama, there was a concession made to the track layout.  Where you see the gondola under the Tram is actually where the main line ran. The track in the front of the depot was the siding.

I can certainly see how it would look like a coal tipple with the way it's layed out.

This all makes me want to hop in the Jeep and head up there.

With temperatures in the high 30s all week (100F for you south of the border folks) plus humidity, as little as possible other than swimming in the lake.

Though I'm not sure if I can say it really affected my modelling, since I haven't got much done on that in a while anyway. I _did_ scan a whole bunch of slides lately from a collection I obtained a couple months ago and did a fair bit of uploading to my site:

http://canadianfreightcargallery.ca/updates/july2011.html

The collection is mostly CN and CP equipment, ranging from about 1971-1993.

What railroad is this loco on now?  That's an old Arizona & California unit, that then spent time on the California Northern.

My weekend was spent bailing out my parent's basement.  9 inches of water, after the sump couldn't keep up.  As far as I can tell right now, I only lost some HO boxes (not the contents), one structure, and I as I don't have DCC at home, I can't tell if my N scale stuff is operable (it was on the floor).  I will say that Kato jewel cases are great, as their almost airtight.  It's the Atlas stuff I'm worried about.  At least my motive power was at the top of the box, and the rolling stock towards the bottom.

Psshh... 9".  I got 3'.  The Pokie is no more.

Friday night I moved the entire layout from my garage to the basement after finishing the epoxy floors and primered walls over the past month.  4 hours later it was floating.  And I was moving it back out to the driveway.

Timing is everything.  Largest storm in Chicago's recorded history.

Occasionally I dream of having a basement, then things happen where I'm perfectly content to be in an attic.  I just pray there aren't any tornadoes about...  Sorry about the mess, Mike.  Hopefully the prep work you did on the floor and walls will help keep the restoration effort simple.  Was the flood from leaky walls, rising ground water, or a swollen stream?

Its on the Iowa Railroad. It a shortline with an endcab unit as its only other power. I think I have a picture of both of them.

finished wiring Grand Junction...  hooked em up to the DS64 after a factory reset was needed (on the 64, not me)  ;D.  Ran trains (i.e. no short circuits).

Also, put in some more manual sliders for turnouts (Gosh, does it never end?)

Also, had a couple buddies over for some track work (Scale track now installed in Yard) and some scenry fun (people, we need more people!!!).  It is always fun to chat with friends when pittering about.

Also did some car card updating for the new Shifter we are bring online.  This season's OP's session will include Class trains, a Tower position and a timetable/fastclock.  Things should get real interesting and it could drive me nuts.

Yeah, I guess it's the Iowa RR.  I had to look it up when I got home.  For reference, I took the shot just off Hwy 20.  I had to drive four miles before I could turn around to get back to it.  :P

I'm told the hopper car is a buffer from the ethanol tanks.  The second loco I posted was working the plant.

That's sucks Mike . The worst PIA troubles to do with a house , at least from my prospective , have some water connection .

Water not leaving .
Water not coming .
Water not heating enough .
Water bill too high .
Water infiltration .
Water drip .
Water damage .

Friday night I moved the entire layout from my garage to the basement after finishing the epoxy floors and primered walls over the past month.  4 hours later it was floating.  And I was moving it back out to the driveway.

Timing is everything.  Largest storm in Chicago's recorded history.

Mike: I am so sorry; I lost the original Puddington Valley in a huge flood that damn near swept Peterborough, Ontario to Montreal... 185 mm of rain in 13 hours..... after 12 days of continuous rain..... My layout died as a result of water killing the supports AND the need to put "useless" household items like furnature, beds and the like on top of the layout.....

Out of this came the Samuel Ridge Sub so you can recover......but it damn well sucks at the time....

Hang tough man !

Jason

Jason, When that engine was with the California Northern it would have gone over Hwy20 near Williams here in California.

Finished painting my kitbashed grain elevators this weekend.  Here are the pictures of the before from last week and the current pics.  It turned out way better than I had hoped.

Haven't added the ramps yet.  Will probably do that as a final step once I make the scenery base.

Two final projects to mark the end of vacation week...

Finished up the wagon top caboose I was contracted to build for the Brunswick Railroad Museum...  It will shortly be trundling around the small N scale display in the front window of the museum  I've got a second kit, but it lacks the critical etchings for the grabs and end rails... If anyone's got a set, I'd be much obliged to take it off your hands.

Also, completed the brain transplant on LRV 1803

Thereby completing the quartet that will be handling trains between Ligonier and Ridgeley.

So the decks are cleared to finish Russ's HO soundies, and to begin installations in a box full of N scale Ann Arbor geeps!  Should be fun.

Edit: Skibbe and Mike, that really sucks. Water problems can be a bear.

With the layout house having been taken over by renters, I've resorted to scratchbuilding structures for the layout, such as this freight house modeled after the one in Arlington Center.

Skibbe and Mcjaco - Sorry to hear about the rain. I thought I had it bad this weekend but nothing like you guys dealt with. I had a storm that sat over our house and didn't move for about an hour and a half. It was droping at one point 2" in a half hour. From 100 degree heat and no rain for a week to 2" of rain instantly, the ground couldn't take it and it was coming in all around the foundation. The train room took it the worst but we didn't have standing water, just running water. The carpet is soaked, just threw out 20 or so cardboard boxes. I have had two furnace blowers running the basement since last night to dry things out. Fortunately I caught it as it happened and saved everything important. We were getting ready to head to a Reds game, if it hit about two hours later, everything setting on the floor would have been a loss.

Good thing was, we still made it to the game while we let the basement continue draining and the Reds won with a walk of home run first pitch of the bottom of the ninth.

Thanks all.  The house is the most expensive part of the hobby, and overhead sewer is on my list next.

Trust me Mike, I know it could have been worse.  Then again my parents don't live by the Des Plaines River.... :P

Hope all the work you did on the walls and floor didn't get ruined.  And of course, you can always call Modutrak-ers for help.   ;)

Oh , so like me you have an under cellar floor sewer line . The same happened to me years ago . A sewer guy told me about the " Clog Buster " which comes in various diameters . Years later after I replaced the sewer main and before the city isolated the street water from the house waste water N stuff we had a back up due to a heavy storm . Well I figured if the Clog Buster when stuck in the 4" sewer expanded under hose water pressure to seal it so hose water pressure can build up past it through a small slit in the end ( penus like ) to blow out a clog it will work to stop water n stuff from flowing back in due to the then city's inadequate design . I have a water alarm in the trap at the cellar floor as well as other places so when the alarm sounded I flew into action . Finding the cause early was key , had I not once I popped the clean-out plug there would have been a torrent of a back flow . So when I popped the plug it was not mush different than the ooze through the poor seal . Expecting the back up I had already had the Clog Buster hosed up . I shoved it in the hole a foot or so , and opened the faucet . That stopped the back flow . When the rain stopped for a while , I risked turning off the faucet to see of the sewer water table dropped , it did . I pulled the now shrunken down Clog Buster back out , cleaned it for another day . All I got in the cellar was about a bucket of water , without the clog buster it would have been a disaster like yours Mike .
