Well; being as the "MIke-O-Trains" backshop is still suffering from a significant lack of parts we had to push back the retofit of the remaining Geeps until such time as the parts are received. This left us wondering if we should lay off the gang or take on another project......we chose the latter....
Hobbycraft Canada (Life Like) commissioned several runs of C424 a few years ago; there were some issues with the first run, specifically paint colour but by the second time they got it right. I have a number of both the handsome tuscan and grey units and a few of the not so handsome Action Red locomotives. They are well executed; that said they are representitive of the original Alco units and not the MLW licenced units that the CPR and CN bought.
There are a number of significant spotting differences between the US Alco units and the Canadian MLW units:
1. Head light is located on the lower short nose, not above the cab windows. (more on this later)
2. Snow shields cover the intakes directly behind the cab (snow....Canada...go figure....)
3. The fuel tank on the LL model is a RS11 style tank; the Canadian units had a unique double tank arrangement.
4. The flaired rear radiator on the LL unit needs to be changed to a flat back, similar to the Canadian RS 10/18 units.
5. The rear headlight is a small, single lamp centered on the rear high hood.
6. Add a side bell on the engineer side.
In addition; (and this is what drives many of the a$$hats here nuts - when a mfg's lack of basic research causes the modeler work) The first CPR C424 was built by Alco (8200; later renumbered to series leader 4200) and the first 9 units in the series were built similiar to the Alco design (except for the fuel tanks) with the head light being on the high front hood. Shortly thereafter the lamps were moved to the lower hood and the high hood plated over. The remaining 30 units were built with a "crested" high hood and the lamps on the lower hood.
If LL had numbered the units 4201-4209 then the modeler could have plated over the high hood light and moved on.... they didn't... not one unit... so I had to renumber the unit to 4208, so the lamp could be plated over....
Enough talk....
The headlight wwas moved to the lower hood, the top plated over with 0.05 styrene and slightly rusted. MU's were added and the handrails painted and weathered....
A small Montreal based company (transport 2000) makes a C424/C630 fuel tank and carbody filter conversion kit that really helps the Canadian modeler. The tanks sides are removed and the new tanks sides and filters added. I also added some styrene I beams to the frame bottom to help take up some of the space. I made snow shields for the intakes behind the cab out of styrene and adhered them over the screens. The unique side bell was added and the three chime horn was moved to the correct spot on the cab hood.
The flaired radiator top was cut off and the rear car body was filed down. Styrene stock was shaped to fill in the rear in the same shape as a RS18. Once filled and sanded down I painted it and added a single small rear light. Oddly enough there were no rear number boards and the CPR did not paint a road number on, as they did with the SD40's and later CP Action Red livery.
I weathered the unit as a good Alco should be; they guys made smoke ! Overall the changes make the unit much more "Canadian looking" and when seen passing a CPR C630 in tuscan and grey, create a much more believable scene that will make the hearts of true Alco and MLW fans beat just a wee bit faster.
Next; we give an Action Red unit the same treatment.

Nicely done Puddington!
-
Pud:
Good job on the MLW C-424. I would like to get one of those Transport 2000 fuel tank kits as I have a CN unit planned.
I have set the models aside for a while to concentrrate on tracklaying. The roadbed has been extended from Tremblay to the Kiskatinaw River, and the track sections have been assembled:
(http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx206/BCR570/Layout%20Train%20Movements%202010/Layout%20Construction%20-%20Benchwork/Layout%20Construction%20-%20Tracklaying/TrackagetoKiskatinaw01.jpg)
A temporary bridge will be required to get across the river and on towards Dawson Creek.
Meanwhile, on the lower deck, for some time I have been unhappy with the curve coming out of the helix enclosure. It was my first piece of track and the curve is too sharp in the middle. I realigned the Pine River bridge and built a new 18 inch radius curve which is much better:
(http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx206/BCR570/Layout%20Train%20Movements%202010/Layout%20Construction%20-%20Benchwork/Layout%20Construction%20-%20Tracklaying/NewHelixConnection01.jpg)
The bridge realignment will also help with the curve at the other end of the bridge, which is where my efforts will be concentrated this weekend.

The first CPR C424 was built by Alco (8200; later renumbered to series leader 4200)...
Sorry to pick nits, Pud, but it was built as CPR 8300 by MLW in April of 1963. She was the first Century series unit built by either ALCO or MLW, sired the largest ever fleet of the beauties assembled, and it was so fitting that the dipsh*ts at CP had her scrapped instead of donating to Delson or Elgin County. The radiator overhang was not applied to many US units vs the notches, and 8300 was the only MLW built as such. CP later modified the unit with the rear end that CP 4201-4250 were delivered with.

Soakin up da sun in st Thomas and San juan

San juan
I go there in the end of February, I will need some pointers (railroad wise)... if ya see anything remotely interesting.
EP
-
Used to go to St Thomas every Feb for 3 years while in the Navy. After a couple week exercise it's fun in the sun for at least 3 or 4 days. Used to call the wife and tell her about the 80 plus weather and that I'm having a drink by the ocean and she'd get mad because it was probably snowing in MD at the time.
-
Good start this week.....
Pudd.- nice Alco
Ian- can't wait to see more of you layout.......
Skytop35- Your layout in MR is what inspired me to switch to n scale........
This week I mostly finished up these two cabooses, the first is a bachmann car that I "fixed".....i.e. added Atlas caboose trucks, Accumates, FVM wheels, plugged windows per prototype.....and a new paint job to get rid of that awful orange......now I really like this caboose...

I also wanted to see what I could do with the windows on an Atlas WV caboose, to get closer to the real thing.

In doing these two cabooses, I came to discover that the decals I have for MEC cabooses is out of scale, that is too large. :?

Ian, 1913 looks right there. I'm glad she's found a good home.
Now, about that GP38-2...

Now I need to get some seagulls and figure out how to model mounds of fish ;)
Keep up the great photos, and Happy Weekend!
-
Coos, what color did you use to paint your trucks and wheelsets? That looks almost spot on for many pictures I've seen. I'm really digging the RS-11 too.
-
I really like the subtle weathering on all of the locos & caboose that have been show so far.
Ian's CR - 1913
Puddy's - C-424
Coosvalley - RS-11
Very nice!

Thanks Mike; I re-read the Rail Canada Vol 3 book and saw that I misread the text; MLW did build 8300 (which became 4200) and actually used old RS parts.... including the fuel tank.....oh well; I have you around to keep me on track ! ;)

Heh, the 4244 in lock4244 is my favorite locomotive from formative years foaming with Dad. I often wonder if it'd be worth it to have CP and CN C424 shells done up in the manner that Briggs did the M630.
IIRC, 8300 contained parts from an RS10 that had some hard luck one day. But, IIRC, CP 5024 and 5025 are part FP7 or F7B, and SD40-2 5560 included some parts salvaged from the wrecked SD40 of the same number. CP did that a lot back in the day.
-
Installed one of the new decoders into a GP-20, received 2 of the Bachmann Northeastern cabooses (much better than you know who and last but not least, just got back from an engagement party for my older son and his fiance and drank all the Vitamin Y I wanted for nothing.

Most of this week's hobby time was devoted to getting the layout restaged and ready for an ops session next week. We haven't had a session since September so there was a bit to do.
What "modelling" I did get in was progress on abbutments and piers for both the Kootenay River bridges and the Lemon Creek bridge. Hopefully photos of some painted and weathered piers for next week.
In the meantime I have permission of Railwire's own Tim Horton to post a couple of his recent test photos . We are still messing with composition etc. The first is a Helicon. H Liners and Cabeese assebled and painted by Jeff Briggs of Briggs Models.

Been working on Jacob's layout with him, but nothing photo worthy yet, just working on buildings and painted the layout edge.
In the meantime, both my boys are Cub Scouts this year, and if you have (or were) a Cub Scout, you know January is Pinewood Derby time!

Yes, it is a Helicon test shot. Tim and I still have to work out these bugs before any photos would be submitted to "publications". Sorry for using you all as guinea pigs.

Ummm, not a Pennsy fan, but if these fit in the mid-60s I have cash.
Mr. Denton - doff of the hat to you. My Father, a West Bend Wisconsin native (but not a railfan), stopped in his tracks as he was walking by my computer and your pic was up, and was greatly impressed. He actually paid compliment to my "weird hobby" because of you. Unfortunately, you just set the bar even higher for me when said "Now that's realistic."

yep Lee; it's "Hoser week at the Rail..." ok eh ?
I finished the second C424 conversion; this one an Action red unit....
The carbody filters make this a very distinctive CP Rail MLW C424; these were a retrofit to the C424 replacing the original vents with the snow shields.
The rear was changed like the other C 424 but the correct double sealed beam lamps were put in (non functioning) The fuel tanks and like were added as well.....
That's a pair of "Hoser-ized" C424's for the Puddington Valley Division.....so, from the winter wonderland known as Peterpatch...'good day eh...." :D
-
I detailed a pair of Conrail SD70MACs and changed the road numbers since I had a few duplicates, thus 4139 and 4144 were born... :D
I need to learn about the Helicon process and start experimenting with it. Those are some awesome shots.

I haven't posted to SNFF for a long time but had a recent burst of progress. Amazing work everyone. The quality of the modeling on RW continues to impress and Bill Denton blows me away while bringing back 60's memories.

Man are you raising the bar on N scale video!! :o :o I love it, it is like an N scale railfaning video I like the sound effects also and the view of the building with the junk yard behind it. It looks so real keep the videos coming. It shows just how real N scale can look, as we have the advantage of scale size scenes with less selective compression.

Saw the new Trainworx 85 flat at my LHS and I know it may not be modern era I could not resist, rolls like a dream, and details out the wazooo... only complaint is the plastic is a bit off color, but nothing a bit of weathering or paint can't address. One of the best weekend updates I've seen yet, hope there are more like this weekends...
+1
Extra points for Jacob, a surefire :ashat: in the making.

Moocho fine stuff this week!
(Is it me, or is something always on fire during our Weekend Updates?)
Anyway, just finished a video of the boxcab on my Mt. Coffin & Columbia River layout.
Only the rear truck has pickup on the boxcab right now, so thank goodness for powered frogs!
First video with new camera, so pardon the light/focus issues.
Thank for watching & keep up the fab mad modeling!

+10. Proud to be a Canuck this week, but my pick of the week goes to Bill's shot. My god. All I can offer is a shot of my freeway interchange in the making (https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=24108.msg252658#msg252658):

Gary! Don't look!!!
Too late:

(Old pic - it's almost complete now.) The awesome thing is that my plan includes all three extant signal bridges over the Pass, and Bob offers all three as kits (or at least he will as soon as the late style one in his post gets done in N, right Bob?). The cantilever at Sandcut (http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=375349&nseq=13) is on my workbench awaiting assembly.

I lowered exactly two N Scale freight cars this weekend - one Roundhouse/MDC 50 foot boxcar, and one very old Trix gondola for the MOW fleet. I used appropriate Atlas trucks with factory installed Accumates and then went for FVM wheels. LAziness compelled me not to take photos, but perhaps I'll do a batch later this week. :scared:

Worked on my original 4'x8'.

FOUL. 1990's Pepsi truck in an otherwise tastefully done scene. Go directly to :ashat: boot camp. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
-
I can't help it, I'm a Pepsi-holic and that is what I had.
(It's a good thing you didn't see the roofwalk-less Diet Pepsi box car that had been parked at the siding.)
I guess love conquers proper era!

If it really bugs you, feel free to send it to my 1997 era layout so my Taco Bell can finally have some sodas.... :D
Those Pepsi trailers are hard to find now. :|

I haven't posted to SNFF for a long time but had a recent burst of progress. Amazing work everyone. The quality of the modeling on RW continues to impress and Bill Denton blows me away while bringing back 60's memories.
Bill, do you remember riding the Milwaukee Road West commuter line out of Chicago and seeing the Pioneer Bank sign as you curved across North Avenue? My homage.

Finally put a Digitrax DZ-123 decoder in my Atlas track cleaning car following directions posted by Ron Bearden. Needed a road number so that I could remember the decoder address and I pulled a little extra out of the decal box

Finished this Lunde Studios kit--the gray building in the middle. Nice kit though the window inserts needed to be cut apart and adjusted to align with the holes. No big deal.
Finally, for RW Asshats only, my completed Downtown Deco Limited Edition kit. It's got to be located in Spfld, IL since they are receiving a truckload of the local brew. For those who come to our Spfld show we'll arrange a trip to visit this fine establishment 8)

Do you have more pictures of your layout somewhere on the internet?
Boobiehatch, nice! :D
well found it, this one is nice! Really hides the corner.

I second that! Really great looking smoke coming from the stacks. Very realistic and again , a great way to hide a corner. :)
-
And it protects the stacks from the harm of the arm .
-
Now that is SMOKIN'!
-
Thanks guys. I didn't expect to see my stacks on SNFF . It's fiberfill held in place with a pushpin in the ceiling.
The Boobie Hatch was a limited kit from Downtown Deco and the "Ladies of the Night" are from Preiser. I didn't realize how anatomically correct the one was until I saw my photos full size
I'm a little surprised that nobody has commented on Homer's beer truck. I bought it on theBay and then lowered the box per the article in this month's MR.
Welcome to RW, Richard and AVEL.
-
I noticede the Duff Beer truck and thought it was a nice touch. Oh, and better watch because the EPA is gonna get on you for all that wonderful pollution at that plant.
