Title: CNJ’s Newark Branch in N scale
Post by: dougnelson on April 03, 2021, 02:14:37 PM
Just saw a presentation on Jonathan Jones’ CNJ Newark Branch. This is a fantastic prototype layout I had not seen before. Jonathan presented this on today’s Speedwitch Media Hindsight 20/20 8.0.  Layout is in progress and I am looking forward to seeing more.

There is a lot of deep thought about this model railroad and some unique concepts.  It is strongly based on the prototype subject, and the direct CNJ facilities and railroad-served businesses will be highly detailed, rendered, and weathered.  Some of the adjacent urban scenery will be modeled with less detail and in monotone, and the backdrop is done in black velvet.  This is a truely unique modeling strategy and it is well explained in this video:

Sorry, yes, you do need to join the FB group to see the content, but this is such innovative modeling I think you will find it worthwhile.

Yes, it's too bad we can't see Mr. Jones' work elsewhere. If it's who I recall, he's a terrific modeler (last I'd heard he was modeling in HO), but I have a personal goal to not subsidize FB in any way. YMMV.

Was the MR trackplan published?

All this good Model Railroading content is really tempting  me to rejoin Facebook...

The post with the trackplan was from September 2010.
Maybe the 1110 in the URL indicates the November 2010 issue - or one thereabouts?

What's so top secret about building an exact model of an actual part of a prototype railroad? Top secret ways of building or weathering?  :?  Maybe they should get a patent ....

Meeting Jonathan at the ME Prototype Modelers Meet, Spring 2019 I think, was by far the highlight of the afternoon.  (It's hard to believe our Northern VA campaign is almost two years out.  Time flies.)  We spent probably an hour trading experiences, ideas, techniques and such.  A very creative guy and one who has come to embrace the advantages N scale has to offer.  Given his profession, not surprising.

At that even, I still will not join FB.  From the start I said, initially in jest but events may have perhaps borne me out, it is the work of the devil.  So I'll miss out on Jonathan's progress.  So be it.

Well, Facebook hasn't stolen my soul yet.  And I agree, the concept of highlighting the trains, fine art style, has had me pondering my modeling style all weekend.  Great stuff, and I'm glad I ran into his presentation at the virtual RPM.  I haven't had my brain tickled in that way, model railroading style, in some time!

Jonathan is an artist first and a modeler second. And that’s the difference.

I think he is the most interesting person in the hobby right now.

All of us are running around doing essentially different levels of the same thing, and along comes a game changer. We’ve all got matte medium and Woodland Scenics dye on our hands, while he’s going in the opposite direction.

I think it’s really good for the hobby.

Hello, Everyone.  Thanks to those who attended the Hindsight 20/20 meet and enjoyed my presentation.  I have attached a few photos and a link to a video so folks not on FB can have a chance to see what I've been up to.  I hope the links work.

Very nice.  Thanks for posting here.

As a distant second cousin to this approach, I have had some test prints of my backdrops printed in grey scale for size & composition testing and I rather like the effect.  I'm considering sticking with it.

Jonathan is an artist first and a modeler second. And that’s the difference.

I think there's a lot of truth in this statement, and it rings true for other modelers that really hit home runs.  Mike Danneman is an artist first.  The Reid Brothers, Bill is a sign painter and artist, and his brother is also an artist... a musician.  Even Rob Arsenault and his weathering is an artist first.

If I want to improve as a modeler, I think I need some artistic training next.  I've been exploring color theory as part of what I need first.

Anyway, yes.  Good stuff, and welcome, Jonathan, to Railwire!

It's not your soul that is stolen Mike.  It's time that is stolen.    ;)

In a way Jonathan's May 2002 MR article detailing the construction of Sweeney Manufacturing planted the seed for the techniques I used to build General Tire.  All the wall relief and details for Sweeney were layered up using which ever material was appropriate.  A lot of it was paper based products.  After thinking about it for 17 years  the technology became available at the hobbyist level and away I went.  No looking back now.

The Newark Branch's use of gray undetailed background buildings was another Hmmmm moment.  We talked about that at length that afternoon.  I'm not sure it will find it's way onto the AC&Y but who knows.  Good stuff regardless.

Thanks Jonathan. I've always been a big fan of your modelling. It's great to see it in N and for such an interesting prototype. Keep up the great work!

Cheers

On the off topic of FB, I just read an article today saying the personal data of 533,000,000 people was sent out into the Wild by a hacker who made it all public.

Chris, I don’t know man.  I’ve never used the platform but there must be value somewhere for hackers.
