I have one of these--it has issues. Pickup is flaky, when it does run it has two speeds, fast and stop, and has pizza cutter flanges. A pretty expensive novelty item, IMO.

I was hoping for slow speed , guess I will need a drag chute . Is it noisy like the old Bachmann trolley ?

Unfortunately, any small light-weight 4-wheel loco will have pickup problems. Even of the pickups and wheels were gold plated.

Yeah, in general you need to focus more on the pickup than the drive.  A rigid, four-wheel frame can't win; it will always be a three-legged stool with one in the air.  Kato's design for the 11-105 truck can be modified so that at least one axle 'floats' a bit for equalization.  That's how I got my 25-tonner to work as good as it does, but I still had to relay the entire industrial park with electrofrogs.

It's not impossible, just a whole lot more difficult than most people would imagine because they're focusing on motor size, wheelbase, etc.

Looks like the ratio is about 12:1.

Found this , shows some guts .

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/79/entry-12323-tsugawa-tu-tmc100but-not-how-the-manufacturer-intended/

That underside photo shows what appears to me to be totally unneeded gears at the end.
The only possible result will be unnecessary increase in friction.

The gears are like that so you can swap out the wheelsets and change the wheelbase.

Still, in that example, the outside gears serve no function except for generating friction. If the wheelbase was shortened, those gears should have been removed.

THE guy in the post said he put them back in to keep track of them.....

And this was a single car , maybe a trailer added so gear train drag was the lesser of evils given what he already knew about it vs what we ( Pete ) don't . If the dang gear rolls freely enough ................. :RUEffinKiddingMe: it's not like the guy was power hungry .

Unnecessary drag is evil (even if it is a single car).  It is a drag!  So says the drag police! :)
