help with an atlas c628

I am busy getting all my locos back out of boxes and running again.  Tried to test run an atlas c628 and one motor shafts spins freely, the other is binding. Lifted the truck on the good end off the rails and got the same result but established that I have electrical pickup on the bad end.   Took the trucks off and both trucks run freely.  Sat the Loco on the rails, sans trucks, same result.  Before I take it completely apart, has anyone encountered a similar problem, or have any wise words on how to proceed.  This is not an area of expertise so I am very much feeling around in the dark.

More info.  I have the Loco apart.  When I spin the flywheel on the good end, the universal turns, when I spin the flywheel on the bad end, no movement in the universal.

Cracked universal. Common issue with the design.  The piece inside the flywheel on the motor shaft just spinning free.

On the diagram here:

It's part 540104.

Thanks Jason, in booting around the web I found an excellent article by Spookshow outlining the same conclusion.
