My first decoder install!

Finally got around to installing TCS CN decoder into Atlas RS1. Looks like I got motor leads crossed up. TCS instructions and photos were a bit vague about those, but how to tell where orange and grey leads go on motor tabs? I had previously marked top of motor, so that's where grey lead is. No problem to switch around. Think I did a good clean job on this. Will post a pic later today. Now just have to figure CV's. No lights in DCC, but on in DC.

Congrats!! The first successful install is not only incredibly satisfying but it is a huge boost to ones confidence...I remember mine very well. Great job!

Well done Joe!  That's a common problem with the TCS CN decoder installs.  Fortunately either a quick solder change or changing the CV29 orientation fixes it.  Besides, with an RS1, who knows which end is forward anyway?  Various roads ran them both long or short hood forward. (even though long hood forward is the only correct way to run an RS!)

I can swap orange and grey leads right at decoder, as oppossed to a disassemble, yes? In DC, light is on rear when direction is forward, and vice-versa.
 Thanks,

Congrats!

Quick tip: Before you disassemble the model, mark the motor terminal which attached to the right side rail (with the loco facing its forward direction). That will later take the orange wire.

In DCC red pickup is right rail and that pairs with orange motor lead. Black is left rail and that pairs with gray.  That is an easy way to remember by the similar colors: Red/orange and black/gray.

Here are two pix of install as it is right now. I will swap orange for grey at decoder in a bit.

just to save you some time, just swap the two wires ( Gray- Orange) at the board That way you will not have to disassemble the loco again.
