Hi
That shanty would be a great place to watch trains.

After months of little time for modelling work, I managed to get my WNY&P M-636 ready for its Cartier paint job. Should be able to finish the painting in the next few days. just a couple of small defects to sort first.

Cheers

That's the shanty at Galesburg east of the depot.
A derailment brought the signal bridge down and scared the hell out of the operator and scattered his Playboy magazines over half of the town!!!

I'm at the Great Basin Getaway in SLC with a great group of guys from all over the country; got to run on three layouts so far and visit a couple of others. Today I had a chance to play the San Bernardino Fifth Street Tower operator at Ted York's fabulous Cajon layout  :ashat:
Pics below, great time!

Richie, btw, that signal bridge had a shanty on top of it until 1941 when the tower was built. Apparently they thought the view wasn't all that good account the steam exhaust blasting up the operators' rear ends. The little yellow crapper at the end of the signal bridge, however, remained in place and use until the tower itself was demolished. Fun stuff!

I finally finished this Briggs 8-40CM unit.  It is probably the most complicated kitbash I have done yet, but I am pleased with how it turned out.  The great paint job was by craigolio.  It runs pretty smoothly now that I oiled the gears   Murky cell photos...

The Dash-8 looks great! I am glad to see someone finally finished one. Glad to hear that it is running smooth with a little oil on the gears. Mine has been sitting at 50% complete for the past year as I was having the same issue with the gears. Now that I know the solution I better get a move on with it.

Nice work!

Added some power poles to the scene - makes a world of difference:

Another view.  Wire is next, along with entry conduit.

Also spent some time degreasing my GP60 fleet.  What a mess.  They run much better now.

No modeling yet, but while at East Tennessee State in Johnson City TN for some business today I was told about their model railroad exhibit.  Apparently they have been tasked with researching and preserving the history of the ET&WNC.  Part of the project is a large, highly accurate HOn3 model of the Tweetsie!  I only had a few minutes before they closed, but did manage to grab a few pic

I decided to add a little more competition for the railroad and built a second bus station.  I'm running out of room for buildings but think that it may wind up in the town that has been collecting buildings for a few years. Almost time to add streets and scenery except I keep moving things around.

This started life as a TomyTec Japanese movie theater kit.  It had a rough stucco which I removed.  The turret was rather misshapen so I laminated Evergreen sheet over it and built up a new cornice.  The movie auditorium roof is now supported by a center truss and can accommodate two buses.

Here's my first Downtown bus station which was scratch built.

Gordon, lol, good luck with that! As you well know, it takes a real effort to "script and direct" the "plot" to run a railroad, especially with a large number of visiting operators. The guys here at GBG do a great job with that, we've had about a hundred people running six large layouts over three days. Today was another treat, running on Gary Petersen's nineties era Salt Lake Southern, see below. See, I can be "trained" to enjoy a more modern era :D
Driving home tomorrow...about 645 miles...but worth it.

Scott:  Do you know why the prototype has a ballasted deck approach to an open deck bridge?  I think the only ones I've seen built like that are on the Milwaukee, which loved concrete viaduct approaches.  Hard to make a solid concrete structure with an open deck.

Of course, I haven't looked at the bridges on very many railroads...
Title: Re: Weekend Update 9/11/16
Post by: Scottl on September 11, 2016, 08:26:06 AM
I'm not sure, but perhaps it is related to the era.  The bridge was built in 1914 so perhaps it was an engineering preference at the time?

Well, my modeling has stopped.  In the middle of a major life event.  Glad when it has passed.

But in the meantime, Mr. Ryoichi Fukushima of Japan, sent me some new photos of his Millennial Edition (as I am now calling it) stock Japanese EP-2.
He was excited to add number boards and builder's plates to his model.

I thought these shots were great for sharing.

Otto, sounds like quite the fun times. I've seen some shots of previous years on the Utah Colorado & Western webpage. Be warned, Northern Virginia has invaded that space now. Brian Brendel, former NVNTRAK President back when the first huge Ntrak layout was done in 1996 lives out there, and had Bernie Kempenski visiting to paint backdrops on a well timed visit.

I've been milling frames and fitting some of my Life Like engines with hardwired decoders.
Here's a DL 109 with a Digitrax DZ126t.
I added a second LED to the original light board and drilled out the shell.

Working on a couple of GP35's for my N scale Arizona & California Railroad. The prototype has a few GP35's, but only one with Southern Pacific Heritage. I'm building two of these, both because I like the details present and it gives me a chance to practice the kitbashing and I can compare methods if I find a better way to to something the second time around. Even though these have SP heritage, most of the light package has been plated over, so I scratched those pieces with varying sizes of styrene.

Added a retaining wall to the Rio Grande Southern and reproduced the iconic Lizard Head Pass station sign (now residing at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden).  This is the highest point on the G scale RGS (due to underground utilities) so I figured it was apropos.

Scott:  Thank you.  It could be "an era thing", or the design engineer just liked it that way.

Some roads preferred ballasted decks, during the steam era, to lessen the fire danger, but if that was their reason, they ballasted the entire bridge.

This is the first real project I've worked on since I got the Kitchen remodel finished two weeks ago.

You do know, that avocado green range was quite the style, back when the Rock was painting their equipment white and blue.

Yup, and now it's gone just like the Rock.

Final preparations were made for next weekends open house.  I cleaned all the track and cleaned up from ballasting last two weeks.  First up was a base coat of grass/leaf litter (used tea leaves).

(https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8167/29619692295_bb5f99bd49_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/M8oEzV)20160910_221351[1] (https://flic.kr/p/M8oEzV) by Adam Henry (https://www.flickr.com/photos/130827720@N03/), on Flickr

Then started planting trees. And more trees.  Until I felt it looked good enough.  And that I ran out of said trees.  Once trees were planted, I put the buildings back in place that I'm using to represent Ag Com until I can scratchbuild or find something that better fits the location.

Once buildings were up, management demanded crews redeliver the cars so the site can get back to business.  A UP Flag unit was sitting in the power tracks at Hagerstown, so the extra crew fired it up and brought the loaded grain cars up the line.  I was able to get to the crossing as it approached Granite.  Very fitting to see this engine on this day of remembrance.

The train stopped briefly to let the conductor off at the switch, so I was able to run thru the woods to get a catch in the trees.

After crews spotted the cars, Ag Com personnel moved an extra car onto the tail track they use to re-position cars on the two tracks with a car puller.  When things quieted down, I caught a family of deer come out of the woods to graze near the waters edge.

Was this N- Scale layout still there?

I've been milling frames and fitting some of my Life Like engines with hardwired decoders.
Here's a DL 109 with a Digitrax DZ126t.
Please document and illustrate the whole process! There's no decent method shown anywhere on the net now. Especially how you rejiggered the original light board, I too want to use it as a stable platform for the new LED.

Ron,

Is the person you are in contact with from Kumata, or a private modeler? I remember a few years ago when they offered one of those models to me for sale after they sent me their spare N scale parts; I should have bought one! You can definitely see where your hard work and dedication have made your models so much better than the stock models (no offense intended to Kumata!).

Also, I still have all of the documentation they sent to me regarding the spare parts and those models. If you are interested, I can scan it for you and email it to you (possibly for your writeup on the new EP-2 models).

Christian,

This man with the model above is a private modeler in Japan who bought one of these.  Yes, it is the same series of the loco you were talking about.  But this one this modeler has is of MUCH higher quality than the one they offered you.

The sequence of events just happened to be from a couple of years ago....

1.  I'm writing/researching for my book on Kumata brass.  I was reporting a bit here and there- posting some findings.
2.  I wrote Kumata by email asking for info.  No response.  Felt a bit discouraged.
3.  You read my work, decide to repair one of your Kumata locos.  So about a couple of months after I had contacted Kumata, you emailed them.... and they answered you.
4.  Your experience encouraged me.  So I emailed again and they offered me the same loco they offered you.   I asked a bit more and found out they had that last loco and 10 unassembled kits.   I then bought all they had.

This is below the actual loco they offered both you and me when we contacted them.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/OGKFPBS9mCXUYMdJFIdCpIvtFRaBBZrzywH9DbAUZ1sssaDhuPBM_6B1adJOeaFb1HQsb0phSkjAamrxqQRMKifYQZI60W3InjpdXM9MWr7DO_XQFZFJeag3vQnvXuY3-byOb8rNgmJIWnMyHRb2FGGV4DB3fa9iL_YHxpRf2NSTgJ4WhgzmjPrxh7A0SZN85yDfLgcyZBtpC6Ok3cDOvS-qBFwZKOFnJJBIa4u6BFURfySewmY9WD_FqRmUErMq4zE-mos6r7OHSSV-pKwWswfGZKAdcCgIs4LNLob1P_5kWsdWi1TjFtIlwVrx8IiwgK0WfC-DYnOHMEH1N0xRODpGWVTlN6kAfmHxG7uVBB-KP4ZkTVdbwryTz2S6TWubCruSpo17cVltzBMLTAmZ4HmDOzCy6Af6vaptVO1mg0Dkum0D5GmU3nooKu77gO5Lmeqast9jP7lMTMt0irKOeyrEMVPIi_0hX4xf8QKWfx05tS9an3AA3mQ5b4tjlZ-A5722VfMcXFqa2sKB1r2D6nVRLugQ_fRuFAZAPhPTVPC14EHB9p4kNkPS6hg4as_YWItfLB19jhtJkgqCmwANJvDFggJ4XaXvpfo5xmL7GUHK1Hzp=w878-h586-no)

If you had bought it, I'm not certain you would have been all that pleased.  While it looks pretty cool from a distance and at first glance, I could make a long list of all the things that were wrong with it.  I think it was un-sold for a reason.  It was a kind of a factory reject or something.

My excitement was more in the kits rather than this one.

And yes, please email me any info you have.  Your info and mine may not be exactly the same.  The modeler from Japan provided me some very helpful info I did not have before.

My long term plan is to one day possibly strip this one of most of its parts and rebuild/kitbash it to the streamlined version.  But I have a LOT to do before I ever get to that point.

And by the way, to all those who expressed concern about my cryptic remark about my life situation, it is not bad- just stressful and time-consuming.  All will be good in October and I can get back to modelling!

I went with the steamship Virginia V up to Port Townsend, WA for the annual wood boat show.

This is the trip back to Seattle.  The engine was doing 150 rpm, and I had to move the oil can with the rotating assembly.  This engine has 70 some odd manual oil points that have to be lubed every thirty minutes.  At 150 rpm, the engine is surrounded by a mist of oil and water.  It's also quite warm from the boiler, around 95 F, and very humid from all the steam.

I also got to see a movie star:

The brig Lady Washington has been in multiple movies, including Star Trek:  Generations and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Well soooooorrrrrrrry.

Here is the link:

http://www.shapeways.com/product/4JFD7QXUG/n-scale-f40ph-3d?optionId=42286384

It's a really nice piece. I opted for FUD. Didn't want to pay for the FED. I know it's only a few bucks more but as it was with shipping it was painful to purchase.

My only complaint is that I think the angle of the back walls is too acute so the back of it comes too far out over the coupler but I believe it will still work. The fit on the modified she'll is excellent. The details on the part align perfectly with the details on the shell so the look is spot on.
