Weekend Update 2/8/26

I'm probably 90% done with the Cherry Run module, and I just glued it into place.  Still need to add some details (you can never have too many), have to add plants to the fenced-in garden area, then I need to seal the seam between the styrofoam and track, paint it, then blend everything in with ballast, grass and weeds.  I'll post more photos in the layout thread.

What are you using for the ground cover above if I may ask?  I love the looks of it.

Completed the Possum Van as a nod to The Red Green show on the layout. The outlines and markings for the teeth were done with Pigma Micron 01 and 003 Pens.

I finished the 45 ton Whitcomb. It’s a printed shell on a Narrow Garage turnback drive remotored with a 6x15 coreless.
Lokpilot decoder and a KA-N1 keepalive. Lights are 0201 LEDs and couplers are N-Possibles.
The print has WHITCOMB embossed down the grille and I was able to make decals to overlay the embossed letters.

Thanks, Sumner. I'm glad to hear you have been there. It was the very place for me.

I used several materials for the ground cover. The grasses cover the terrain, but not thickly. So, I stippled the white bond and applied the mixture of Woodland Scenics Static Grass with the Flourish Bottle offered by KATO. I also used the Grass Tufts offered by Green Stuff World for thicker bushes like those at the root of the line pole.



Moegi-iro static grass by KATO seems to be a NOCH product. The bottle is also a NOCH product, but it's just a plastic bottle with a filter on the spout.

@Bob If you have room to include the river bank, an authentic detail would be a few locals sitting in web lawn chairs out in the water.  You can wade out from the boat ramp and it stays pretty shallow for the first 100 feet or so.  And don't forget the innertube with a cooler full of frosty beverages tied off to one of the chairs, and an enthusiastic swimming dog, preferably with a payload of big stick!

I've been working on this dust collection system for the Zumbiel Packaging plant, but in the process added a few vehicles to the batch (the dry van pictured and some '69 Chevy Camaros) as well as crossing timbers that are needed for East Norwood.



I also picked up this little beauty as my America 250 tribute.  Plus I just love GG1s.  I designed/printed/installed better scale couplers since it had the giant Z-scale Marklin "harpoons".   I have no justification on the current layout of course (maybe DIT to a scrap yard?  But I'm not going to weather it!), although sometime in the future I might do a Princeton, NJ module circa 1980; I have already the 3D designs for the station and Nassau Tower since I was hoping to do that in T-scale a while back.

I have a space I am putting a chemical plant on the lower level of my layout. Since I am modeling a specific area I wanted to actually put something together that was not generic. All I originally had were some blurry old aerial photos.

Love seeing this kind of research and translation to the model environment being done.  You're off to a great start.  Keep going!

And no, GG1 4800 (aka Old Rivets) would not be headed to a scrap yard.  It is still extant in the collection of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania at Strasburg.  So there's your waybill!

Is that your dog in the Potomac Lee?!  I have thought about adding the river bank - I would need to widen the layout by about 6 inches similar to what I did for Duffields (page 7 on the CSX blog).  This would not be difficult.  I could also stand to have another foot of mainline prior to the helix which would enable me to move the interlocking to the north thus giving me room to have the road cross the tracks and thus down to the boat ramp on the river.  This would be harder, in fact impossible right now (lengthening), but I could make things wider.  Something I would really like to do (and have the space for) is to add a side module in the Martinsburg area so I could model the historic B&O roundhouse - that would be cool. A wild card is that I will retire in the summer of 28' and we may move to our place in S. Jersey where I have a larger basement.  If that happens, I could move the layout (not fun, but it is modular), make Harpers Ferry a foot wider (easily) as I would have access to both sides of the layout so no long reaches - right now I have access to a single side.  This means I could really do a much better job modeling the historic town and do a better job with the Wincester branch, which I could expand.  I could then add more to Cherry Run as well.  I'ld love to include the Magnolia cutoff, but that will probably be a bridge too far (literally).

Finished another set of well cars, this time 53' Thrall 3-unit in TTX.  Printed body with rails, walkways and ladders included, printed trucks, MT body mount couplers, FVM wheel sets. Brass inserts on well walls add a bit of weight and stability. Painted and finished with Microscale and homebrew decals.  Lightly weathered but more grunge to come with MIG Ammo washes and enamels. (Sorry for the soft focus  )





Also tested my container lock hardware paint stencil.  Worked ok with correct placement, but a bit soft around the edges.  I might try narrowing the stencil elements a bit to sharpen and try a non-metallic paint.  It is promising though.
