Way back in 2014, I came across an old article by Bob Chapman in the Nov. '98 issue of Mainline Modeler about kitbashing a C&O baby triple hopper. I really enjoyed the article and I decided to make an N scale version.  I made the cuts as shown in the first photo and then, with perfection being the enemy of good enough, put the pieces in a drawer and they stayed there until the other week when I assembled the car as-is. The only new things I did the other week was build an underframe, build new bolsters that don't stick out past the car ends like all old N scale cars did back then, and scratchbuild the peaked ends (I started with an I-beam).



I painted, decaled, and weathered the car this week. It only took 11 years to complete. 



The motivation for finishing the car is that Bob Chapman has been selling off his entire collection this past year on eBay and last month I bought the car from the article! It's my first HO purchase. (Photo is from the auction.)

Let me show another cut from my N-scale Cisco, Utah diorama.

This is the oldest existing structure in Cisco, Utah, the Maynard House, named after John Aubrey Maynard(1895 – 1972), who lived here from 1959 to the last.

The western part of the structure was built in the 1890s by Victor Putman Hanson(1841 – 1920), who established the Cisco Townsite. He offered the structure for the schoolhouse between 1898 and 1919.

Love everything about this including grabbing up a piece of history so it gets remembered for what it was in the railroad press.  Nice work Aaron

Thanks, Mike. I'm thankful that the HO model wasn't a hot commodity and was within my price range!

Comparing the two cars reveals the shortcuts I took to just finish my car.  My biggest surprise from this whole thing is how little my shortcuts bother me. Maybe it's because I know this car is a runner and that I could design and print a more accurate version now if I wanted to.

Tried to make Pullman-Standard fluted sides in N scale, with their characteristic alternate wide and small corrugation, on my filament printer.

It wend from "bad" (on top), to "rather mediocre" (center) to "there is hope" (bottom). Fine tuning such prints is a tricky job. Trial object is the left side of Pullman-Standard Coach Plan 7593, built for ACL, PRR and RF&P in 1949/50

This was another week of solid progress for me.  After getting the yard tracks in Chetwynd primed grey last week, it was Dawson Creek's turn this week:






On Thursday I got the yard tracks in Dawson Creek sprayed Railroad Tie Brown:






And on Friday I accomplished the same for the yard tracks at Chetwynd:






They are looking a little more like railway yards now.  Next up is the detail painting, which will take me at least a month, maybe more  .


I also finished and tested the isolating track in Chetwynd this week.  I placed the switch in between two control panels so it doesnt get bumped accidentally:




During the week I also assembled my 30-degree crossing, cut the isolation gaps and added additional ties for strength, including one in the middle as recommended last week:




I am now working on the wood ties for the straight sections of track which will adjoin the turnout, crossover and crossing:






And finally, Philippe Whyte reprogrammed my new Budd RDC car with the correct road number, bell and horn for BC-11.  Next up is installation of N-Possible couplers and various detail parts:




I had an opportunity to run one of Michael Batten's new RDCs during his operating session on Friday night which was enjoyable.  His post to come.

I finally got around to painting track for the Z scale East Norwood layout and finalizing my planned finishing technique.
 
Primered B&O Midland Sub main with oxide red primer:
