The oddball Porter 0-6-4, Hickory Valley #3, is now painted and the performance has exceeded all expectations.  I've got to put on a siphon hose and do a video, but it's one of the smoothest performers I've ever seen for such a tiny locomotive.

The boys had a big two day fan trip planned this weekend. Down the Northern Central, then out the WM. All pulled by steam. How exciting!

But the steam engine is doing what steam engines do: not be done in time. But Conrail offered the latest thing out of the shops. Sounds great, right?

I rode the New River Train one Fall from Huntington to Hinton, WV and back.  We left Huntington with a steam loco.  It derailed in Hinton yard, due to the track sinking into the mud on the way to the turntable.  The yard was largely unused by then (1980s).

Chessie dug up two first-generation road switchers to pull the train back.  I don't remember what they were, but obviously not common on Chessie mainline trains.  I think they got more attention from the serious railfans than the steamer did.

Another cut from my N scale Cisco, Utah diorama. Rio Grande main parallels the US Highway 50/6 within the Cisco townsite.

This Phillips 66 station, located along the US 50/6, was established in 1934 by Bill and Eppie Capansky. Marmaduke Woods long operated the station by the name Duke's Service. Bill's son Ted succeeded the business in 1970, but it went out of business in 1972.

On the way to Notre Dame for this weekends ND Vs Navy game, we stopped in Canton to see the McKinley memorial and museum. They have a nice HO layout and collection, including brass pieces.  If you’re in the area,  check it out. Lots of stuff for kids of all ages .  A very short video (57 seconds)

This week saw completion of my scratchbuilt turnout and crossover for the NMRA's Civil Certificate:






To demonstrate their operability I need to add lengths of straight track at each end for a locomotive to run from/to, so I started assembling those by preparing and gluing PC ties onto templates:






Last night my friend Mike stopped by with his new Rapido Trains Budd RDC cars and we took them for a test run:

I completed the last car for the @Baldylox Relco vegitation spray train. Now to finish the loco… the windows are just tinted. It doesn’t come through well on the photo, but it ended up matching the prototype pretty well.
