Weekend Update 11/10/24

Picked up a handful of old freight cars at a small train show in Winchester, and a couple of them went directly into the paint booth at the Laurel Valley Backshops.

I never really liked the way the Merchants Warehouse came out using the Atlas Middlesex kits so I am replacing it. I need some more time on it, but I like this way better. I also added a HO Miller Engineering 1940/50's  coffee sign so it could be seen by anyone heading east down Kenilworth. Has anyone tried spaying ME signs with some Dullcoat to get rid of the glossy plastic look ????

I will be lighting the interior of all building using 2600K COB LED lights with a variable PWM dimmer. Lights will be mounted in the inside of the front wall while the back wall will be white corroplast to allow for duffused lights. Nano LED's will be installed under metal roof for spots.





Next building to be finished will be Franklin Sugar to hide the corner. I need to finish the buildings against the left wall so I mount the track onto the modules working from back to front.

I also weathered a set of Scale Trains Milwaukee Road SD40-2's.  These are great looking and sounding models.

The last couple of weeks I’ve been working an a handful of PGE locos for a friend. They’re all done. Here they are on my Rutherford River crossing which is their prototypical stomping ground. I need to figure out how to focus stack on my phone.

I'm confused as to why the guy has his carpet bag out (maybe he broke down and he's hoofing it) but the locos, bridge, and scenery are beautiful.

While printing the various details for grade crossings on the Modutrak thread, I started tossing in some extra files from the web. The tower is from Cults and will be Noble St in Chicago. The other two buildings are @Chris333 files plus a quick bow roof design for the garage.

Sirenwerks:  Maybe he's a deadheading crew member, and had a friend drive him up to meet the train, for the rest of the way back to the terminal.  We just can't see the driver in the car.  Or, maybe, the driver is the one who took the picture!

Classic Railwire thread drift

Being a transition era modeler for a longtime, I’ve never had the need to speed match my fleet. Now that I’m dipping my toes into embracing Conrail and Chessie power for my Free-moN set ups, I spent most of this weekend getting all those locomotives to play nice with each other. Oddly it was a pretty elating experience or as the great Chuck Mangione would say “It feels so good” to see a 3-4 unit latch ups making laps on the dougnut layout.

What a busy weekend!

First, did some railfanning with Ben Snyder (who many of you may know) on Friday. Everything we touched turned to gold that day.

We started off watching NS kick cars on my layout (oh how I wish we could do that in N).



Then caught an NS coal train on the mostly nocturnal Port Road. He took the Royalton Branch, which was even more rare, so we were able to get ahead of him and shoot some video (into the sun, of course).

From there we went east and caught the Landisville's breautiful SW9 switching the NS interchange in perfect light.



Next we went in search of the NS New Holland branch local, which we found at the end of the line in New Holland.



Which we chased and caught a few more times.







Before heading to Strasburg, because if you're that close, you've gotta visit the temple.



Saturday was ops on Jeff Mutter's EL Scranton Division with @Maletrain and his lovely wife, Femaletrain.



And on sunday, before they got wet, I collected some authentic NCR leaves to turn into forest floor.

I ended up tossing NS 3329 back into the alcohol bath, just the cab and long hood, and started fresh with the paint. I'm much happier with the stripes, no wrinkles.



I knew I should've painted them from the beginning. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

I finally got my airbrush going again after a few months hiatus. I spent most of my weekend working on the HLCX 7701, which was a former Texas-Mexican Railroad GP60 before it went to Green Mountain Railroad (Vermont Railway) and then to HLCX where it spent some time on the Arizona & California.

If anyone knows of a reasonably priced FVM SSW Late GP60 let me know, need one for the HLCX 7700...
