I also got back to work on my three M-420s after a long hiatus.  I had previously got all of the parts de-sprued, sanded and fitting together well.  This week I got the pilots prepped for receiving the couplers, and got the couplers installed nice and straight and level, and working well:




I also got all of the required holes in the carbody drilled out (90 per engine x 3 = 270!).  With that huge task behind me, I assembled the first carbody:

Those Reading F's are nice!  In keeping with an ABA Fs theme: Here's my T scale CN FP9/F9B/FP9.  The FP9's are the new ones that are commercially available, the B-unit, couplers/fuel tank/window inserts are for a detail kit I've been working on recently.  The detail kits, and maybe the F9B, should be available alongside the FP9s in the next month, and hopefully a couple passenger car shells.

I finally got around to painting a bunch of Conrail H1K hoppers. These are similar to the MTL Ortner hoppers but have a ladder on the A end and a self-opening door mechanism underneath. Glidden Cool Gray in a spay can is a close match to the light gray of these cars. I still have to weather the interior of the cars as they get pretty beat up in stone service.

Edit: I also finished my windowless N11 caboose using Atlas caboose trucks, MTL couplers, and CMR decals.

I am working on a model of Palmer (MA) Union Station for the HO Central Vermont RR in Northern California.  I have a separate thread on this build here:

The 1884 station was designed by architect H.H. Richardson in his classic Richardson Romanesque style.  He designed about a dozen stations for the Boston & Albany.  Palmer Union Station was shared with the Central Vermont and sits near the acute-angle diamonds, resulting in the station's triangular shape.  The first thought was how to model the rustic stone walls of granite and sandstone.  I have access to a laser cutter and thought that I could etch the stone pattern and cut the walls, windows, and doors.  First time using the laser cutter, so this was a learning experience, but I have a friend with lots of experience. 

I set up scaled drawings and then drew an overlay of the stone pattern for scanning. To achieve the rustic texture, I would apply matte gel medium to each stone to create 3D texture.  I used this technique before on my PRR Sherman Creek Bridge.  Although that sounds like a lot of work, it goes by pretty smoothly.  I then painted the walls to match the stone colors.  The complex roof should be an interesting exercise of math, fitting trial and error.

Working on the other walls now.  The laser cutter at work:


Walls will be done in layers such as the inset area at the main entrance.  Windows will be cut as another layer, and canopy supports will be laser cut.

Wow! That is genius! I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this technique before.

I completed the bench work for my expansion off my main layout.
I lost 50% of my work bench/ desk area, but I gained a 9 foot long siding and 24 ft branch line.
