I saw it locked, so I made popcorn. Very disappointing.

You might have this backwards.  You get the popcorn when the message exchanges are starting to get juicy, not after it is locked. At that point you missed all the "fun".  :|

Ed, I forgive you.  And judging by the thread "cleanup" the locking might not have been unintentional after all (although I don't think it would have got to the point if being locked).  I have mellowed out lately, and will do my best staying away from certain members.  :D

It's a 3D printed part that sits down on top of the whole thing. These cars have an outer shell (the, well, shell), a flat weight, the interior, two loose window strips and then a roof. The roof on the regular cars has some detents that hold it in, but these replacement roofs don't have those. Right now it's just a friction fit that works pretty well, but not perfectly. When I'm done messing with the car I'll probably add a little Walthers Goo and keep them clamped tight until it dries.

This is not a true statement.  the Detents in the car are not symmetrical and you may have reversed the roof so it is not engaging detents in the car so it would feel like a friction fit.  Try reversing the roof.  there are three detents on one side and four on the other.

A little "better modeling through peer pressure"...

Glad I checked my mentions last night. I showed a shot of this "ready for paint" 2 weeks ago and then spent the next 2 weeks outside working on the yard and didn't come back to check. @robert3985  noticed the brake stands were not oriented correctly. His comments prompted me to redo them and make the handrails more accurate in the process. Now it really is ready for paint.

Interesting! I saw they didn't line up and was like "eh", but I didn't realize they weren't symmetrical!

Don't worry about some crooked window shades. By the time they got to the Conrail era, I'm sure some of them were cranky and didn't work right. So count it as a prototypically accurate (and little modeled) detail!

Bryan:  Thank you!  I thought there had to be a reason for the different fans, besides complicating parts orders.

jpwisc:  Why the different fans for radiators and dynamics?  Different diameters, or the manufacturer just wanted to complicate things?

I’m glad @wazzou had a more specific explanation. It was something I found out railfanning with a friend who worked at BNSF. I never thought much about the engineering. To me it’s just what it was. There are also a lot of 9 blade fans out there, but I haven’t seen those in N yet. NTW yard was also a great place to catch overhead views of -2s. On this SD40-2 you can see the standard 8 blades on the rear fans, and upgraded 9 on the forward radiator, and 10s on the dynamics.

@SkipGear ...Happy to be of assistance!  That's looking very nice now...as well as the photo of it primed in your later post.  Will be awaiting photos of this excellent model when you're finished with it.  A great addition to your rolling stock roster and a compliment to any train it's accompanying!

Cheerio!

That's gross (but realistic).

Karl:  Interesting picture, and, yes, the different radiator fans are obvious, once one knows to look.  On the rear two, opposite blades really are opposite.  On the front one, each blade is opposite a gap.

Really like that caboose weathering shot.... and the proof with it.   I like it!

Modeling what is actually there rather than what you wish or think was there is always a huge step, warts and all.   But there are limits.   Mine was when I observed fresh bullet holes in the top of the tender of HVRR #5 in a 1938 photo....couldn't bring myself to drill holes in a finished model....

@randgust ... If your model was N-scale, it would be difficult to drill bullet-sized holes in it anyway.  An improbably large .50 Caliber hole would be .003" and a much more common .30 caliber hole would be .002"....pretty damn small drill bits for either!

Speaking of N-scale bullet holes...I remembered I put two shots in a bullet-proof glass CA-8 window...
