I don't see a negative anywhere....
John. Several of us here down under are waiting for the narrower Decoder from ESU. Mat told me via email late last year that they were waiting to complete the order for IM before the generic narrow version would be available sometime early this year.This should solve a lot of installation issues for the older locos where the interior of the body shell had to be widened by careful filling to fit a loksound.We cannot wait.Rod.

Thanks for the photos!Well, the lack of a marked negative pad sort of sucks. There are some caps that might be keep-alive caps on the top side of the board in the middle toward the bottom of the photo (the four caps sitting around the left-hand "neck" are probably the bridge rectifier caps, but then there are three oriented N/S more toward the middle that might be for keep-alive purposes).
Is there an instruction sheet with these?
If someone is willing to send the decoder to me to borrow it for some reverse engineering (without damaging anything) I'll figure out where the additional keep-alive caps can be attached.
As Peteski notes (implies?), there's always a way to attach keep-alive to a decoder. All you have to do is find the bridge rectifier, and then solder the negative cap lead to the negative side of the rectifier circuit (and the positive lead to the common positive, which is easy on this decoder since that's the U+ pad on the back). On some decoders, the rectifier circuit is four individual diodes; on others, there is a single SMD rectifier "chip." Now that I look at the board again, that thing at the top of the middle of the top of the board with "6RB" (?) on it looks suspiciously like a rectifier, with a bandpass diode next to it. The problem is that it's not always easy (!) to solder a wire to the appropriate place. But it almost certainly CAN be done - you just have to find the right place . . . It would be very disappointing, however, if ESU didn't provide a pad for the negative connection, like they do on every other LokSound decoder.John C.
As for "sensitive to dirty track", my DC locos were as well, until I cleaned the wheels. I suspect that whatever they used to blacken them, or possibly some oil on them, was the problem. They ran fine after cleaning.
Well, that is why I once I figured out the component locations, I would trace the circuit to find some easy to solder locations for the negative/ground.Looking at that blurry photo (and without being able to examine the circuit closely) here is my speculation as to what things are. (Attachment Link)
