I hosted the Gandy dancers this week, and we got the new ROW adjusted, ready for track.

Four more tortoises (some tricky ones) got installed.

And power for the layout got upgraded.

I also added another booster and ran some trains. Finally, I spent some time programming in JMRI. More in the build thread.

If you've been wondering about the "turnout to nowhere" at the end of the Aspen branch of the Colorado Midland, wonder no more. Eventually the branch will stub-end on the other side of a low-side Howe truss bridge, typical of smaller bridges built by the Midland.

Another view showing how the branch will curve off-layout to the left rear over the truss bridge.

...and it's always a good time to run steam on the Pennsylvania RR Juniata Division:

Well, I am still working on making cuts with a razor blade and hope I will soon be able to make the cuts on Micro-Trains mail cars like I need so as to assemble parts for a model based on Great Northern #5 steam generator car.

Also quite happy that I have made a couple of purchases that will further other projects, a Kato ED16 electric that will be the chassis for a kitbashed electric boxcab locomotive and a Bachmann Ten Wheeler.  Been wanting a Ten Wheeler since I first saw an AHM O scale Casey Jones back in 1970 and have waited a long time for someone to make one in N.  It fits well for a shortline 4-6-0 passenger engine though I will need to change the tender to better match my preferences.  Once I get the other tender, hopefully next month, I will be needing to figure out how to letter it with dry transfer lettering since decals of the appropriate type are not available.  Super long name so it will be a challenge but hopefully soon I will have something to show.  For now I can sit and stare at my beauty that I got of eBay at a great price, grateful that it went this way (actually true of the electric as well, which I got for a lot less than retail)!!!  Talk about "eBay humor"... I am laughing all the way to the bank!!!  LOL!!!

Some time ago I received a set of nine BCOL bulkhead flatcars from the second run offered by Prairie Shadows.  These models entered service today after the decks were repainted a more realistic colour, the end platforms were painted Dark Green, and weathering was applied.  A variation in deck colour between cars was sought:

Close-up of BCOL 17815:

And loaded with lumber:

A test run was in order.  Here Extra 812 East crosses the East Pine River bridge:

The tracks do not yet extend into Dawson Creek, so the lumber loads for the return trip had to be trucked from the mill to the end of steel.  Here Extra 804 West approaches Tremblay with the nine loaded cars:

This was the first movement of revenue cars over the recently completed main line.  Thank you to my friends Jeff Briggs for the painting and weathering, and Dave Mackinnon for the superb lumber loads.  Together with the six cars from the first run I now have a total of fifteen which should be enough for my layout.  The BCR had several thousand of these cars, but they were less common on the north end in my era.

The lumber theme continues this weekend as I am assembling some loads for my flatdeck trailers.

Awesome models, Tim!

Can you tell us a little more about the lumber loads? Are these available commercially or was this a friendly favour?

Set the trestle onto the layout. Raised the "river bed". Next up is setting in the new steel mainline bridges. They go in between the trestle and the highway bridge.

Thanks,

Hi Craig:

The lumber loads are definitely available commercially; Dave has had a lot of requests for loads to fit the Canadian bulkhead flatcars in HO and N Scales.  The following link will take you to his website page for lumber loads; click on #652 series for the Canadian cars.

http://www.detailsnscale.com/n_lumber_loads.htm

They are expensive but they are not kits; they are fully assembled and are prototypically correct.  I have about a dozen and no two are alike.

Eric White and Miguel Halpern made a visit yesterday to deliver the Mike McGrattan Memorial Train. I'm on the right.

I also completed an N scale 1951 Pontiac Chieftain from Rapidpro/Shapesways.
