I do not mean to hijack this thread by any means!  I just have a couple of questions about the Tomix 9600.  So the drivers are 51"?  What is the total driver wheel base?  And I gather that it's tender drive?  Thanks!  I'm enjoying this thread, always had a soft spot for the M class

Yes the drive is in the tender.
The drivers were 51" with huge flanges that were replaced with 56" lifelike mallet drivers.
I'll have to get the wheel base for you later when I'm home but it is the exact same as 1 LL mallet engine as I used the mallet side rods instead of the tomix.

The complete drive or just the motor?

The complete drive or just the motor?

Who cares?  :o
Lol

Actually, I don't know yet. It might get a full tender drive or run with a drive shaft to the mechanism.

Don't forget that the "Ms" and the "M1s" had suicide cabs which were banned from production not long after the "M1s" were built.  The fireman had to stand on a small platform on the front of the tender making for a very dangerous situation...

It's one of the things the crews on the Strasburg "love" about the engine. The engineer's position is also somewhat less than ergonomic as well.

That being said, it's a hell of a brute, right up there with #90.

Slow progress but the boiler is slowly coming along. Lots of work left to do!
I'll be redoing the cylinders and valve gear. The Bachmann mountain cylinders just looked to big. I'll be using the tomix ones but completely reworked. The rest of the valve gear will be from the light mountain.

The cab need lots of work still. The sand dome and stack are both turned in my drill and hand shaped. It's slowly coming along.

Very nice! It's good to see Mel Thornburgh's techniques (turning parts in a drill (in his case it was a hand powered wheel brace) are still alive and well.
It truly is an inspiration to hit the bench and build something...  :)

I like the tapered boiler.  That's a real spotting mark on this engine and it looks good.

Thanks Ryan and max!  I will say that it was a pain to make with all of the tapers. Walkways cab and piping are next along with the handrails. I'll finish up the valve gear and mount the motor in the tender. Hopefully I can find some places to add a little extra weight as I think it's going to need it.

Oh baby. That's looking great.

Behind Great Western Baldwin decapods, these might be my favorite locomotives.

I have to admit, the flare at the top of the stack looks just a tad big, but, otherwise it looks great.

Where did you get those trucks for the tender?

I have had a close encounter with one of these beasties.

I wonder if this could work for building a Monon 4-8-0 too... Hmmmmm...
