I give up, how do you remove the shell from an Atlas GP7/9 (Classic)

Lou, I took one apart some months ago with no real problems. Just the old "knock the pilot on your knuckle" routine. They fit tight, and when I get the shell back from JDG I will make the chassis fit better, relive some of the locating bumps. Bob.

I'm also not impressed by using the high G-force method of removing the shell. But it seems to work for the people who use it (not me).

I wonder if one of our scientist members can calculate the G-force involved in this operation.

Be very careful with this high G-force method! I broke a snow plow on an Atlas B23-7.

 I use a piece of really dense foam rubber that's only maybe 5/16 high..Not too crazy about the loco box method..Some locos,the drop method is the kiss of death,Atlas/Kato U25b,Life Like plastic frame GP18 for starters..

The so-called "High G-Force" method (others' description, not mine) has worked for me on Atlas locomotives.  You just need to be careful and watch what you're doing before you release the lid.  You don't need to drop the box from six feet off the deck for this procedure to work.  If you put the lid in the right place (under the steps), you won't break the pilot, nor any plows or detail parts on the pilots.  This method also prevents the hood from separating from the walkway, which can cause the handrails to break.
