EDIT: I added photos, description and fix to the bearing problem at the end now...
=========================================================

I'm soliciting opinions on the "length" flaw in the old Con-Cor 2-10-2...

So, upon looking at drawings of a 2-10-2 (not PRR)  with 63" drivers (like the Con-Cor one), I notice that
the prototype wheelbase is 22', but the Con-Cor is 24'6".  That's about .1875" (3/16") too long.

Looking at the mechanism, yes, it looks like they could have squeezed the drivers enough to get about 1/2 of that
out of there.  A similar Kato Mikado, when you "5 driver" it, is 23', or .075, about 1/16" too long.

Compared to a 5-drivered Kato, we are talking about a difference of .1125 ( < 1/8" ).   Or put another way,
the Con-Cor vs 5-driver Kato total wheelbase is   1.8375" vs 1.725"

Is 1/10th of an inch spread over about 1-3/4  what folks hate about it?  Or is it the excessive boiler length that's
the killer here?

Thanks.

I feel it is the extra length that bothered me , and that was accented by the lack of details under the cab . I filled that in with some basic injector stuff in this one .

Richie, you mean the boiler length or the driver wheelbase length.   I like what you did, but that seems to point more to
the body being too stretched than the driver wheelbase.

Boiler Max , I feel is too long . There was a big discussion and measurements on the Atlas forum IIRC . I'll see if I can locate it .

When I printed out scale drawing in N scale I found the CC loco was 3/8" too long. But this was months after I bought it. Since the very beginning I thought it looked very strange. First I thought it was how wide the firebox is at the bottom. I took the frame apart and ground a lot away so I could bend the firebox inward, but it still didn't look right. Once I got the drawings I knew what was wrong and got rid of it.

When I put a Kato frame under my new body the rear driver is real close to the firebox now (I also narrowed this firebox)

And Max knows about all the "other" problems I had with it...

Now I have a locomotive that looks "right" to me even if the drivers are off a hair and really it is one of my favorite locos. It has been "done" for a while, maybe I should paint the darn thing already.

While we are on this discussion, does anyone know the driver diameter of the Kato?

The diameter across the tire is 0.375" or scale 60", diamter across the flange is 0.425" or scale 68".  Had a drive and caliper handy...

Who made this for ConCor?  I have two of the Bachmann 2-10-2's which are dual mode.
I did not see the ConCor one in any LHS.

DID KATO MAKE THIS ONE FOR CONCOR?  I know the ConCor U-50's came from Kato. Super locomotives.

Max,
I don't own one but worked on a Concor for a friend in our N-trak club. I think it is a combination of both the driver wheel base and boiler combined. The loco just looks disproportionate. Then again a UP 2-12-4 looks odd to me also but I think you could stick that mechanism under the concor boiler and it would fit.

I don't know if you could hide that long wheelbase or not. What loco are you thinking about?

It's been a number of years since the Con-Cor 2-10-2 was released. They haven't been run again as far as I know. They're pretty well sold out everywhere.

No, not a 4-12-2 for me.   I'm in NP/SP&S world, folks.   But the GN had some 2-10-2.

Here's a pic.
http://www.yesteryeardepot.com/GN2120A.JPG

It was just an idle thought, wondering if some good could be made of those 2-10-2 mechs I have.
One I bought new, and one was a slightly damaged one off eBay for a steal.  Lots of good parts, but
haven't ever used them for anything.

On my first one, I fixed up the bearings/axles and the tender pickups, and put a new motor in it, so it runs
really nice.

The boiler would have to be cut up and put back together anyway (with a Belpaire firebox, among other things) for the GN engine, so I'm not too worried about its length.  The driver wheelbase is the thing.

Max, it's all about proportions to IMHO.  I can most definitely live with dimesnional inaccuracy as long as the rest of the components look proportional to the components that are inaccurate.  For instance in Chris's pic above, the dimensional accuracy pushed the drivers under the firebox.  I would have lengthend the bolier to allow for a reasonable proportion between the edge of the firebox and the driver to make it "appear" correct even if it meant moving the cab  back that amount too (oh the horror and sacrelidge :P)

No offense Chris.  I know your  :ashat: work is impeccable.

Remember the trailing truck on my converted Trix dec to L1 being out of position to the front cab wall?  Same thing here.  Grow and shrink (where feasible) around the dimensions you have on a chassis you have available.

When things are not proportional is when I'm distracted to think that something is dimensionally off.  When they are proportional it's much harder to tell and more pleasing to the eye.

I did so much complaining about the CC 2-10-2 length there was no way I was gonna purposely make mine too long  :P
