Actually, the recommended method when you want to install turnouts point-to-point is to place the points as close to each other as possible to minimize the S-curve effect.  Placing a small piece of track between the points theoretically makes the problem worse.  If you're going to space the turnouts apart, you want to add a piece at least the length of your longest car.

I hear you.  I've just seen it work both ways.  Just asking.  Not sure what type of rolling stock Lee has going through there.

The track accessed by the switch in question will function as a bi-directional siding, basically a holding track for trains waiting to be worked in the yard, or waiting for clearance to enter east staging.  By rule, it's in Yard Limits, so nothing will be flying through the interlocking there.

I do have some longer cars, hi cubes, auto racks and some piggy back cars, I don't anticipate any problems, but if there are, I'll let you be the first to say "I told you so!"

Well, it's the end of my weekend, here's the results of today's labors...

Only 9 square feet of layout left to build...


Found some plywood that met the immediate need out in the garage, and went to town!





Tomorrow I'll be installing the necessary hardware to secure the drop section by the closet door, then I can start laying track.  The long section there will be part of the permanent construction, carrying the east and west mains (on the cork) the long siding closer to the wall, and the first A/D track.  There's about a half inch of fall between the deck over the helix and the section where the round house is.  Separating the main grade from the yard will let me manipulate the yard to make it more level, while the main climbs more gradually.

So, somewhere in this area there will be a golden spike driven!  Woot!

Then the real fun begins, rebuilding the inbound throat in the East Staging yard (converting from Peco Mediums to Peco Longs) then...  Test Driving the entire railroad for the first time in over a year!

An excellent idea!  We should plan a "ceremonial" closing of the rails in the near future.  But as Dave and Bryan can attest, give me a little time to clean up the room!
