Are the SD45 DRGW's in yet??

Yep...had to order more in as UPS was not very kind to one of the boxes and I had some smashed up jewel cases and locos. They should be arriving today and shipping will resume.

So I think it's going to be a while before Matt could really tackle something as big and expansive as the SD40-2s.

His locomotive projects have been things that are rather small in scope:
GEVOs (and note, he got panned in a few places for foob body styles on a few)
The Hiawatha
The GP60Ms

If he did the SD40-2, in order for us not to come after him with torches and pitchforks, he'd have to keep cranking them out. That means that we'd probably see no other products out of him for a LONG time as their re-runs keep eating up his bandwidth.

It'd be good for a lot of modelers, but possibly not for his company. By doing these, at least as a stepping stone, it gets him more experience, and keeps the medium term opportunity cost risks down.

I do believe that these two locos will be good for Matt's business. A lot of ATSF modelers out there, and the "SuperFleet" era is a great one to model.

It goes to show that the economics of bringing out a new locomotive design has probably changed a great deal over the last decade. 

It seems that huge runs of locomotives are no longer necessary as part of a successful business model.

Nice engines. I shot a GP60M in Boston a few years ago along with a GP60B and a NS unit. What an odd run through. I'll probably pick up a GP60M, just because they are so damned cool.

Russ, I don't think you have to worry about anyone taking on the SW1500. Not unless someone comes up with a reliable small motor thin enough for the hood. I doubt Atlas will make one because of the motor issues on their MP15 and the fact that their AAR-A trucks would not work well with a SW1500 due to their offset geartower interfearing with the inset cab and tall frame.

I want to make a new 1500, but keep forgeting to ask Richie to mill me a new set of frames.

Here is my question. IM has suggested they will be doing a SD40-2. Would there be enough demand for both FVM and IM? I know I would get whoever gets closest to a real CR version. IM seems to be learning... slowly. The CN engines still have errors but look a lot better than teh SD40t-2 or SD45-2. At least they are heading in teh right direction.

Now is FVM does produce a SD40-2. Will they use tyheir own mechinism? Could they use the flexcoil trucks from Atlas with new HTC sideframes? I'm not a fan of Atlas's HTC trucks and I really wish there was something better. I don't really have any performance issues, they can be tuned will, but the sideframes are but ugly.

I would imagine it would be their own mech and trucks, which together with free standing (pre-painted) grabs etc means I'll wait for the FVM version  ;D
