Here's a challenge for you... try to fit a second brewery in near National.  Maybe just inbound grain loads with all the outbound being by truck.  Gives it more of a "Brewer's Hill" ambiance, like the real one...

Hint, pull the grain track for brewer #2 off the same lead as National's grain track.  You should also move the outbound track to the other side of the building... brewing is a vertical process, but bottling and distribution is very linear.

Of course, the only thing that would make all of that look even better would be an H10sb shuffling around some X29s and H30s.

Maybe the chemical plant might become... who is who makes Colt 45?

I like that, but there is no other side of the building. It's gonna be a flat against the backdrop.

So, comin around the other side, here's the "east canton" area.



What you've got there is an overview of the whole thing. The track loops around at the bottom right there, and back into staging (the next installment...).

Sorry that pic quality sucks.

In the lower left is the industrial lead area. I'll come up with a better name at some point.



It's going to have three industries along it, with a central track that terminates (but looks like at one point it went further).

Heading down the branch first is a building products company, I'm thinking I'm just going to pave up to the tracks.


Next to that is Acorn Iron and Steel, a scrap yard (might be Free State Steel, still working on it):


And behind that is a plastics manufacturer. Gotta have somewhere to spot those pretty plastics hoppers.



In the far right corner is a spur that's going to serve one of two purposes (help me decide):


It's either going to be a road salt terminal, or the interchange with the Canton RR.



Also visible in that photo above is the spots for the GAF plant. This plant manufacturers roofing material, receiving granules of something in covered hoppers, and shipping out finished product in 50' boxcars. Colt 45 was a National product originally.  Next time you buy a 40, check the label.  If it still says G. Heileman, then it went along with the rest when National went down the tubes.  It may have spun off.

The other brewery across Conkling Street was originally Gunther's, which didn't have as big a following as National, but held it's own into the 1960's, when Hamm's bought it, which later became a part of Schaefer.  By 85, none of them were making beer on that corner, although I think National still maintained a distribution facility.  National had shifted all of its brewing to Lansdowne, out there by the beltway (on the B&O) by the late 1970's... another shining example of the City of Baltimore's disdain for businesses that make money and hire people... The onerous tax structure pushed it, and many other businesses out to the County.  At that point, the morons in Annapolis took over, and pushed large scale commercial brewing out of the state in its entirety.

But I digress...

Okay, so let's say you get married.  Your new wife lives in a really nice house with a view, low property taxes, easy access to shopping and schools, and the neighbors all have college degrees and great jobs.  You live in a dumpy apartment where the pipes leak, the neighbors are noisy, and there's always someone trying to rob you.  Where do you choose to live? 

Name one major corporate merger in the last 60 years that succeeded a Maryland corporation, and the resulting entity stayed in Maryland.  It's not easy to do, is it?  I wonder why?

...So really, Ed should be modeling boarded up warehouses and abandoned trackage... ;D
