I had some leftover cork roadbed, so I decided I could use it to easily model road shoulders. It's 3 lengths of cork, with the middle section flipped upside down so I don't have to fill it too much. On top of that is just a layer of joint compound (again left over from fixing some walls in the house). I would have used the super lightweight stuff, but it had dried out in the year that I was away. The joint compound was sanded, then spray bombed black, then painted grimy black. The shoulders were done with sifted limestone "dirt" that I got from a gravel parking lot, although a natural stone fine ballast should do the same thing. The crack was done with the back side of a #11 blade, and a super fine sharpie. The patch was just drawn on with a sharpie, then bragdon-ized.  The line is drawn on with a prismacolor colored pencil.

And thank you for all the words of encouragement guys. I blame the railwire for my efforts. The HCDs I have seen on here have made me jump into the fray.

The breaker is taking shape.



This is my first official kitbash, and it's going surprisingly well, considering my approach was this...

Start hacking plastic, and hope like #@$% it fits.

I found the article of turtle creek coal company on MR online, and printed out lousy jpegs of the HO scale bash. I didn't follow it exactly, mostly because I felt I was pressing my luck with cutting stuff up, and minimizing the grafting minimized my chances of screwing up royally. I'd like to have it painted by Weekend Update.

I guess it's a good thing that I haven't built anything too permanent yet.

I have already torn out the "backdrop" mountain and replaced it with another, and today I was shaping it with poor man's foam putty aka fast n final lightweight spackle.  While the stuff was drying, I was browsing the net and found this:

I really like the way the city is laid out on the right side. I don't plan on doing the tunnel thing, but due to the shallow depth (29 inches) of the layout cramming a believable town into the carolina central as planned is pushing the limit. So...now I have to decide whether or not to rip out the right side mountains to make room for a commercial district. 

I hate having to rip stuff out though!

Work continues:







I am working on lighting options, and trying to decide the best route for windows. The other thing I have noticed is that I don't like the waste pile. It needs more textures. Right now it looks like a giant sand pile...
