Couple of autorack era questions

... Although, wouldn't it be possible that a newer rack scheme got applied to an older flat without the flat being repainted?  I know that would be a longshot and I doubt RC would do that, but still...

RC did that with a couple of them, as all of the schemes used came from photographs of existing prototypes.  However, most of the TT flats feature rack schemes that were indigenous to the TT time period.  Also use the style of panels to help determine the time period.  RC offered 15 or so different panel schemes overall.

I don't have anywhere close to 88, maybe a lttile more than a dozen or so plus four of the articulateds.

About the only advantage to not having a layout is money can be blown on other things... like freightcars.

I hear ya. I am also unencumbered by the financial needs layout construction entails. So I collect and build freight cars and kits.
