What's the thing hanging down on the side above the digit 5 in the cab number? My initial thought was a mirror, upper mount broken off and so hanging upside down, but I'm that isn't what the detail is meant to be.

That's one of the small, fold-down type of cab mirrors.  The BLMA fret comes with both that and the regular 'vertical' one.

Here's a shot of CP 9516 that shows the second mirror.  I imagine it's somehow used for back-up moves in the yard(?)  One thing I didn't realize until this evening is that this mirror is only mounted on the engineers side, not both sides, like on my unit.   >:(

I posted some notes on CP 9516 in the detailing forum, for those interested; including some comments on color.  [Everything I know about color I learned from Rich Yourstone.]

Jan, can't wait to see those "shorties" loaded up and on the road.

Zox, that side-by-side is awesome.  You're really nailing that scene!

Ed, I don't have any GEVO's yet.   :'(  I'm waiting for the DC units to come out this summer.  Have you examined the light tubes on yours?

The small mirror is an auxiliary one that faces forward, allowing the engineer to see someone standing on the front bottom step of a wide cab without craning your neck out the window. The two reflective surfaces face each other in such a way so that by looking forward into the large main mirror, you see the reflection of the bottom step in the smaller one. Hope that explanation makes sense. They swivel out of the way when not needed.

Now, why there's one on the fireman's side on the CP engine, I don't know. On BNSF engines they're only on the engineer's side.

Beautiful weathering/detailing, Gary, BTW!

Maybe because CP operate on both left and right handed running tracks?

After working my way through a too-long list of Honey DO's, I got down to some serious railroad work . . .

Saturday I picked up some C55 track at John's from Jerry's old layout - thanks to both (and to Lee) for facilitating; then off to MBK for some more BLMA detail parts for future projects.

Sunday I started out railfanning St. Denis MD with Bob Bufkin and Co.:

Then went to my favorite building materials salvage place and bought this monster (94x24 inch) closet door:

Following surgery it will become layout section 2 (inspired by Lee's present work at Elkins).

Then, after the hockey game ended (!) I did some scenery on the refinery section:

I've got a couple more sections of Mold-a-scene to lay down, but we're not that far away from grass and trees (not to mention roads, fences, etc).

Ugh.  I have some sort of small black/dark brown bird in my attic.  Every time I find his ingress point, and plug it, he finds another.  Thankfully he's nowhere near my layout supplies.

3 years ago we had mice in the shed, i plugged the hole.  now i think they got in via the gap in the door - the wood has warped and there is a gap that i think is big enough for them.  time to put in a metal flange...

they ate my stored frames from the bee hives.  so much for storing comb in the shed!

Many years ago during the winter my wife and I were going out. She puts on her coat with the fur collar and hears a squaking noise.  Turns out a mouse had had babies in the collar.  She screams and runs and I'm laughing my butt off.  Took awhile for her to forgive me for that.

Yep, and there's a place next door that sels stuff that movers got stiffed with - so like if you hire a mvoign company to go from Arizona to DC an dthen never pick up your furniture, after so many months they sell it.  Really odd collection of things.
